Finished Taxi Driver last night.

Uggggggggggggggh. Also, spoilers. )

Long story short: if you want to see an unrelentingly grim movie about one man's alienation from society and his fellow man and how it drives him to insanity and violence in New York of the 1970s... watch Joker. Better character establishment, better exploration of motive and personality, less incel grossness. And it still has Robert DeNiro.

A friend of mine periodically checks to see what's leaving Netflix in the next few weeks, and recently saw that Taxi Driver will be going away at the end of the month. I figured, well, it's supposed to be a seminal cinematic work, right? Might as well watch it just to say that I did. I knew maybe two things about the movie before starting. One, the 'you talkin' to me?' scene with the mirror, and two, it's the movie that supposedly convinced John Hinckley Jr. that the best way to impress Jodie Foster would be to shoot President Reagan. I'm about half an hour into it thus far. Spoilers and disquiet for what I've seen ahead. )

Saw Godzilla: King of the Monsters last night. It wasn't bad, but I could have done without the HERE LOOK IT IS A FAMILY AND THEY HAVE TROUBLES, WATCH HOW THE MONSTERS AFFECT THE FAMILY stuff involving Kyle Chandler. Actually, I could have done without Kyle Chandler's character, period. Wasn't thrilled with the estranged ex-wife, either. Spoilers )

Went to see Shazam! last night. It was awfully goofy at times, but a not insignificant part of that came from Zachary Levi basically being asked to act like a very large fourteen-year-old. I enjoyed it, honestly. Even with the choices they made for the villain vs. how said villain acted in the comics.

Nice to see Philadelphia getting some superhero action instead of trying to add Fawcett City into the DC universe as yet another fictional burg.

Best use of Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now" in a superhero movie. Also, I am not going to be able to hear the opening riff to "Eye Of The Tiger" without thinking of this movie's scene with the crowd at the top of the Rocky Steps for a long time.

Slightly sad that they felt the need to do what a lot of movies do and make a famous statue significantly bigger than it actually is just so that it would look more impressive when it hit the ground. (See also "Escape From New York"; the Statue of Liberty's head is nowhere near the size of the one John Carpenter had in the city streets. I've been inside the thing. It's not that big.)

And good lord but the actor playing untransformed!Billy looked like he could've been Maisie Williams' sibling.

Saw Into The Spider-Verse last night.

!!!!

It's not often that I come out of a movie thinking 'they got it right, they totally got it right, they know the character and they know the universe and they did the story right and it was wonderful', but good goddamn, they got this movie right.

Miles Morales is the most adorable thing I have ever seen when he's running around in the store-bought Spider-Man mask. And he's fantastic overall. I had thought Vincent D'Onofrio was more or less the definitive Kingpin after what I've seen of Daredevil, but this version was wonderful too (of course he sounds like that!). All the Spiders were amazing including Peni Parker and her spider-powered mech from the future. Even Spider-Ham. (Who is now my introduction to John Mulaney's voice.) New York City was almost entirely the way it's supposed to be; I say 'almost' because I have absolutely no idea where the church is that they used for a funeral scene, and it's a little distracting trying to figure out geography for me. (It looked like Manhattan, but the churchyard was right next to an elevated subway line, and the area around the church didn't really resemble the parts of Manhattan I remember being that close to the El.)

Also, this version of Doc Oc was pretty much the best one I have ever seen. And I was impressed enough by this version of Aunt May that I may have to watch the movie again just to take notes on her outfit, because as much as I would love to do up a Spider-Man Noir costume, I would swelter to death at most of the cons I go to- but this Aunt May, I could cosplay without a problem.

This was a marvelous movie and the after-credits scene drew applause.

Went to see Sorry To Bother You last night. Good movie, and funny, and darkly satirical, and the first time in a LONG time that I have been genuinely surprised by a movie.

I... do not know how to describe the surprise without giving away a major plot point. I am going to put it behind a cut because I have to tell somebody.

Okay, here it is- some nudity description involved but that's not the surprise- )

I just... it... yeah.

(Also for those who may have an issue with such things, Tessa Thompson's character is a performance artist who at one point does a piece that involves standing in front of a crowd wearing only strategically placed gloves while they throw cell phones, bullet casings, and water balloons full of sheep's blood at her.)

I saw Incredibles 2 on Friday. It was brilliant in so many many ways.

HOWEVER.

THIS MOVIE ABSOLUTELY REQUIRES A GODDAMN PHOTOSENSITIVE EPILEPSY WARNING.

There is a fight sequence in a room with many, MANY flashing strobe lights that goes on for long enough to be a problem. There was NO warning of any kind about this possibility. I am guessing no one at either Pixar or AMC remembers that one Pokemon episode.

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, people, if you’re going to put a flashylight sequence in the middle of a movie you have to let parents know before they buy the ticket. If movie theaters can put up ‘hey, there’s several seconds of absolute silence during The Last Jedi and it’s not a technical flaw, it’s part of the movie’ posters to warn people, then they can put up ‘hey, if your kid has a seizure disorder or if anyone in your party has photosensitive migraines, you need to not be where you can see the screen at TIME_1 through TIME_2′. This isn’t protecting feelings or spoiling plot. This is a medical issue.

I went to see Annihilation last night.

Natalie Portman was a very good actress in it. So were Tessa Thompson and Gina Rodriguez. I did not realize it was Jennifer Jason Leigh in one of the roles. Oscar Isaac was very, very pretty. Whoever designed the Minor character spoiler here ). And the design on Scene spoiler here )

But I honestly cannot recommend going to see this movie unless you have a really, really major hankering for a cross between Summary spoiler here ) and are not the sort to scream ARE YOU COMPLETELY CRAZY HAVE YOU NEVER SEEN HORROR MOVIES at the characters. And even then I'd go see it at a matinee, because it's not worth full price.

Oh, and the Dissonant Music for Horrific Scenes gets super loud at one or two points, so be prepared for that.

Content warnings: female nudity from the waist up and solely from behind in two scenes, one on-screen violent death, several off-screen violent deaths whose victims are found later and have the camera linger on the results, one scene involving on-screen surgery, two uses of spoilers for scenes very near the end ).

I understand it was based on a book and that the movie plot bears very little resemblance to the book plot. I may go see if I can find the book at the library.

Got to see The Shape of Water on Friday. Matinee showing at one of the local theaters (I'm burning vacation days by taking Fridays off in Nov. and Dec.). Excellent movie, and props to Del Toro for his casting across the board; super extra props to the makeup and costuming team because I cannot imagine making a fish-man suit that can be used for an actual dance number was easy.

I do not much wish to spoil it, so I won't. I will, however, drop a few warnings: TW: violence, sexual content )
