Saw Godzilla: King of the Monsters last night. It wasn't bad, but I could have done without the HERE LOOK IT IS A FAMILY AND THEY HAVE TROUBLES, WATCH HOW THE MONSTERS AFFECT THE FAMILY stuff involving Kyle Chandler. Actually, I could have done without Kyle Chandler's character, period. Wasn't thrilled with the estranged ex-wife, either. At least they killed her. If Ghidorah didn't finish her off, Godzilla's atomic pulse did. I was genuinely worried that they were going to allow the greatest mass murderer in human history to live, the way they were dragging out her presence on screen and trying to cast her actions as some kind of Taking Responsibility For My Horrible Judgment Calls redemption arc. Right up until Godzilla popped out of the wreckage with Ghidorah's last remaining head in his teeth I was POSITIVE that woman was going to somehow magically crawl out from under a car that had miraculously protected her from the radiation.
I would have been fine with both that woman and Kyle "I study wolves! I'm a biologist who studies wolves! The monsters all around the world are acting like a pack even though every major study of wolves since L. David Mech has indicated that 'packs defer to an alpha' is behavior based on captive, unrelated animals!" Chandler appearing, making a few shouty gestures, doing whatever necessary to get the plot in motion, and then getting eaten. Fifteen minutes, death by kaiju, let Charles Dance carry the human bad guy weight instead, we're done here.
On the other hand, I have never once seen a kaiju movie that destroyed Boston, so props for that. Ghidorah and Godzilla destroyed Fenway Park, pretty sure they were the ones who took down the John Hancock building (200 Clarendon may be its official name now but it's the damn John Hancock building) too, Mothra and Rodan wound up fighting in the Financial District and smashed up One International Place (it's hard not to recognize the shape of that building), I know I saw the Custom House Tower being blasted apart but I don't recall if that was Rodan or Ghidorah, you name it.
