Got to see The Shape of Water on Friday. Matinee showing at one of the local theaters (I'm burning vacation days by taking Fridays off in Nov. and Dec.). Excellent movie, and props to Del Toro for his casting across the board; super extra props to the makeup and costuming team because I cannot imagine making a fish-man suit that can be used for an actual dance number was easy.
I do not much wish to spoil it, so I won't. I will, however, drop a few warnings: there is one part that involves rather shocking violence against a cat. The actual violence happens offscreen, but characters come in immediately afterwards and the immediate aftermath is visible.
There's a part involving violently detached fingers that are grafted back on. By the end of the movie they are forcibly removed again and it's gross.
All the nudity is female and most of it is frontal, except for one scene involving a male character in the act, but he's only seen from behind. I am not counting the fish-man for nudity because according to the main character, his genitalia are retractable, so unless you wanna count fish-man butt in the same category as human butt, you're not seeing anything on him that'd up the rating. And no, we never see anything to confirm what she says about his equipment.
There's a couple of sexual acts depicted, but all the outright activity is either consensual or solitary. However, there's some heavy sexual harassment and some heavy threats/promises of unwanted sexual activity directed against people in lower positions of power that are all too similar to the way people of power act in the real world.
And there's a bit involving a finger in a bullet wound.
Frankly I found the cat part and the threat/promise scene the most disturbing of the bunch. I'm not saying to hold this stuff against the movie, but I did think that if people had the opportunity to see it but were likely to have issues or flashbacks, they deserved to be warned.
