No spoilers: Shazam!
Apr. 5th, 2019 08:54 amWent to see Shazam! last night. It was awfully goofy at times, but a not insignificant part of that came from Zachary Levi basically being asked to act like a very large fourteen-year-old. I enjoyed it, honestly. Even with the choices they made for the villain vs. how said villain acted in the comics.
Nice to see Philadelphia getting some superhero action instead of trying to add Fawcett City into the DC universe as yet another fictional burg.
Best use of Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now" in a superhero movie. Also, I am not going to be able to hear the opening riff to "Eye Of The Tiger" without thinking of this movie's scene with the crowd at the top of the Rocky Steps for a long time.
Slightly sad that they felt the need to do what a lot of movies do and make a famous statue significantly bigger than it actually is just so that it would look more impressive when it hit the ground. (See also "Escape From New York"; the Statue of Liberty's head is nowhere near the size of the one John Carpenter had in the city streets. I've been inside the thing. It's not that big.)
And good lord but the actor playing untransformed!Billy looked like he could've been Maisie Williams' sibling.

I digress...

Date: 2019-04-05 07:36 pm (UTC)Honestly, having read a lot of the old Marvel Family comics growing up, my biggest fear coming into this was that it wouldn't be goofy *enough*. I really have a hard time imagining what a grimdark Shazam would even look like.
("Kingdom Come" came close, and was brilliant, but it was a very specific context that only works in that very specific story.)
