I made a couple of masks for my sister and her kids. Wonder Woman for one of the girls, Spider-Man for another, Minecraft for the oldest girl, rainbow colored musical notes on a black background for my nephew, puzzle pieces for my sister. Also Darth Vader, because her fiance* requested a Vader mask for one of his kids.

Recently my sister asked if the Spider-Man masks were in adult sizes, because her fiance has more than one kid and the other one expressed an interest. I told her I'd used a template for ages 6 to 10 but still had Spider-Fabric left over, so I've finished up a new one...

Tests at Argonne National Labs back in late April indicate that masks composed of a layer of high thread-count cotton and two layers of natural silk fabric or polyester chiffon can filter out 80% to 99% of all aerosol particles. The tests came with a warning that said masks lose huge amounts of filtering efficiency if not properly fitted or sealed.

I worked up my first cotton + chiffon Olson mask this weekend and will have another one done by end of day. Outer layer is cotton of unspecified thread count chosen largely because I was able to find duck prints on that web site that involved neither the University of Oregon nor cutesy Easter imagery nor hunting dogs nor the Disney Corporation. Two layers of polyester chiffon fabric attached. Inner layer is composed of 600 thread count cotton bedsheet material. Decently breathable during informal tests. Will apply Hollywood Fashion Tape to edges of mask when fully completed (that is, when I have the elastic loops in place) and let folks know whether it's a decent everyday mask design or something better reserved for high risk situations.

Did up a batch of masks over the course of a few weeks; you can see the changes in technique, stitches, etc. as I got more of a clue of how to use a sewing machine. Yes, there's a bunch of thread colors and yes, I spent a good bit of time doing stitching with different colors of thread on the spool vs the bobbin- I wanted to see what I was doing wrong with my tension and I only had one bobbin that the machine would accept (I tried a different one and the Riccar just laughed at me) so I couldn't swap in a matching color once I corrected my issues. But the masks are now in the possession of a social service agency in Lawrence for distribution to young teenagers in the worst/second worst COVID-19 epicenter in the state of Massachusetts. Hopefully they'll do some good there.

Pictures ahoy )
