Okay, yesterday's zombie stuff is pretty well out of my system. Today, I think, we go for either the ficwritey or the surrealistic.

Vampire moths in Finland, for example. Warning for an image of a moth somewhat smaller than the last joint of a human finger, complete with proboscis for drilling through human skin. Its Latin name is Calyptra thalictri, and the males are the bloodsuckers. The females are mostly into fruit. Weird thing is they also feed on the tears of large animals. It's practically the gothiest insect ever, except that it's not a very gothy colour.

Also, courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] daniidebrabant yesterday: Vosges Exotic Chocolate Candy Bar What Has Got Bacon In. yes, bacon. As in tasty smoked pigflesh. One of these days I am going to sit down and put together the Most Treyf Meal Ever and this is going to be on the dessert menu. The one composed of olives and white chocolate bothers me on a different level, but that is because white chocolate is not worthy of the name of chocolate. Confectionery, sure, but that ain't chocolate.

Proably more later. For now I thought you should know about these.

*I didn't find out about it until it was nearly over and therefore am still going strong.

**If you thought it was fun, you ought to write ficlets for [livejournal.com profile] worldwarz. I'd love to see you do some, especially since you've read it. I kind of want to start an RP of it, but I don't think it would work since the beauty of it isn't interaction, but how personal the narrative is.

***The TASTY centers of my brain are telling me chocolate in bacon actually sounds kind of appetizing. What is wrong with me?

We did the bacon-chocolate thing at a party once. High quality bacon and a chocolate fondue fountain. It was ... remarkably good. That whole salty-sweet combo works amazingly well. And chicken mole', when done well, is some of the best ever.

I seem to recall reading about Vosges doing bacon truffles a year or so back. I guess it was successful enough to merit a whole bar.

Clearly there's something in the air right now; what with [livejournal.com profile] chefcdb's bacon profiteroles, and a whole article in the NY Times yesterday about diners discovering the glories of animal fat (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/06/13/dining/13glut.html?ex=1339473600&en=f3be5e188e3fb86c&ei=5124&partner=permalink&exprod=permalink). Some kind of reaction against the fat-phobic abstemiousness of the last couple of decades, maybe.

For the Most Treyf Meal Ever, may I suggest the Nielsen Hayden recipe for Bacon and Egg Soup (http://nielsenhayden.com/makinglight/archives/002237.html)?

Right. I could have happily gone on all summer without knowing this... hope the mosquito coils also keep these babies away. Oh, yes. Do NOT come to Finland in June without Deet. No kidding.
