Crikey, I scored 86%. Of course, given that I've lived here over half my life, I have an excuse. You, on the other hand, are probably just well-informed. ^_^

I just want to say, though, that I have never heard Austin called any of those things listed in #11, and I've lived here for nearly 8 years. "Live Music Capitol of the World" is more like it. Idjits. On the other hand, it warms my Austinite heart to see questions about Leslie on the list.

A friend of mine on his first trip to Austin once caught a glimpse of Leslie from behind (in heels, thong, and microminiskirt); his reaction was, in essence, "Hey look at that really hot OH MY GOD."

Ah, no. These are different southeast Texas floods. They were, like I said, the year of the Hayman fire. So that was 2002. My 1999 disaster was in Wisconsin. I don't think I got to go on a disaster in 2000 because my grad school instructor was being a jerk about rescheduling exams. 2001 was the Twin Towers, 2002 was Hayman Fire duty for ten days and then three weeks in San Antonio for the floods that most people probably called the San Antonio floods and the Red Cross called Southeast Texas or South Central Texas floods, 2003 was.... um, might have been the San Diego wildfires in November... 2004 was hurricane season in South Florida, and 2005 was Katrina from operation headquarters in Baton Rouge.

Yeah, when I worked with the Red Cross I marked years by which national disaster operation I got sent on.

I will always remember the girl on the Riverboat Discovery tour (not really worth taking if you're on your own and seeing what you really like, but kind of entertaining as part of a cruise package) holding up a white ermine pelt and looking at her audience. "Any Texans here?" she asked. "Because up here, this is what we call a Texas polar bear..."

I'll sell you a few points from mine? I bought my only cowboy hat from the Australian imports store in San Antonio, across the street from the Alamo. Wanted to fit in but didn't like the local hat design.

I swear, at least one out of every five people, if not more, seemed to be wearing cowboy hats that year.

I'm not particularly interested in being Texan either. I'm just a New Yorker, dangit. I mean, yes, I own a T-shirt that says 'Texas Is A State Of Mind', but that doesn't mean it's a state of mind I carry around inside my skull on a daily basis.

(It means that I needed a shirt with no Red Cross logo on it the first night I arrived in Texas, because we went straight from the airport to eating dinner and we were eating at a bar. There are rules about wearing logo clothing in the presence of alcohol.)
