Joe the Verizon Tech just called from my building's basement. He says that the dial tone is okay in the basement and that tomorrow's tech will have to 'buzz it up' to my apartment. He also says the swingy-thing jack is just a jack with an old-school child or bugproofing shield on it so far as he can tell from my description.

Joe offered to hang about for a little bit if I could get home early, but I've still got an hour's work to do, which is more time than Joe could spare. Someone should be coming tomorrow. If there is no one by 11 AM I will break out the flammenwurfers.

I figured you were still waiting for phone/DSL to be connected. That always is most annoying.

Building wiring between the basement and your place. Most likely the pair you are plugging into doesn't connect with the pair they are sending your dialtone into the building on. The tech will probably put a tone generator at your end, go down to the basement, connect wires, come back up and collect zir tone generator, and magically you'll have service.

I have a lovely game of Civilization III going as the Chinese under Yin the Whacker, so's you know. You almost conquered Japan. Egypt was at war with us too, though, so it was easier to make peace with Tokugawa. We may have to go stomp him again soon, though- some of his men were pulling up roads last I checked...
