Years ago, when I worked for an investment firm in midtown Manhattan, there was a day when a lot of stuff went wrong in the server room. I managed to fix it, but I remember saying to one of the other IT folks at the time that I was really glad I'd gone into IT instead of medicine, because if it had been a similar day in the medical field, people would have died while we were trying to figure out what to do.
On a similar note I vastly prefer learning to sew my own clothing to having gone into medicine- more specifically, I prefer it to having gone into one of the surgical specialties- because it's a whole lot easier to go 'crap, I sewed those together with one of them the wrong way around- get me a seam ripper and a scrap jar' when you're dealing with organic cotton knit jersey and a future polo shirt than when you're dealing with, like, somebody's arm.
