Dear brain:

Next time, before settling on a daemon for a character, please take the daemon's species' natural habitat into account. Someone whose daemon becomes a hippopotamus is going to be miserable in the Capital Wasteland.

Please, please, please consider whether a Cape buffalo or a white rhino can be substituted as Fawkes' daemon. I know you really want him to have the second deadliest animal in Africa as an indicator of just how dangerous he can be, but it's freakin' semi-aquatic. Unless you want him to spend most of his time in the vicinity of the Potomac or assisting at Project Purity you're really going to need to swap that hippo out for another species.

Cape buffalo are almost as dangerous as hippos, plus they have the added bonus of apparently understanding the concept of going out of their way to get revenge on someone who hurts them. White rhinos are... they're rhinos, you know? What kind of idiot gets in a rhino's way?

Distant third place alternative: Grevy's zebra. Not quite the same level of Rule 87 as the other species for size, but it's still big and it's the only animal in the drive-through safari I visited that had multiple "For the love of God, do NOT hold out food in your hand for this animal, PUT THE FOOD ON THE GROUND AND CLOSE THE WINDOW IMMEDIATELY" warnings. So it's at least somewhat dangerous, plus there's the whole 'I would rather be roaming free' aspect.

That's an oddly appealing image, as awkward as it would be logistically. Which makes it a strong argument in favour of the hippo.

I kind of like the idea of a sand hippo. And going with Fallout's fauna it could be like the old D&D land sharks, the Bullet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulette).

Interesting thought, the platypus. Most people would probably assume it was a mutated rat, even. I've already handed out two snake daemons, though- one to Butch, the leader of the Tunnel Snakes, and one to Ellen's father.

I didn't think that daemons needed to be concerned with what a real animal's habitat would be. They're spirits.

There's a mention in one of the books of a guy whose daemon settled as a dolphin, and who had to take up a career at sea as a result. I'm going with the assumption that while daemons are embodied spirits, they are still subject to some degree of need for approximate environmental conditions.
