It's the result of a DDoS attack that's been going on since Sunday (http://status.livejournal.org/). And it's just been getting worse and worse. Apparently LJ has concluded it's a DDoS so strong that the backbone providers (Qwest and Verizon) couldn't stand the load, with an avg. traffic load of 6 gigabytes.
