So I've been to see Captain America. Two things I can say without spoilers: the Marvel Comics movieverse army was racially integrated in 1942, and Howard Stark was an awesome man.
idk I honestly thought Howard was pretty bad too. Like, in general no, but there was that one MEGA AWKWARD MOMENT with the fondue where he was like "So, this is a totally appropriate time to ask you on a date, because you have breasts and I have money!"
...in a sense I guess it was classier than Tony tends to? But possibly that's just because in the 40s you had to be more oblique about your poorly timed come-ons.
:|a Maybe this is me and my social perception failing again but I thought that he was 100% joking with that.
"Hey we're getting shot at wanna go on a date hahaha?"
In other matters, maybe we didn't see it because he's not the main character, but he didn't seem nearly as much of a privileged alcoholic that takes other people for granted. He was kind of a douche, but he seemed to work pretty okay with Steve. And he kind of didn't seem any more misogynistic than is appropriate for the time period. (Not that it's okay but he didn't seem ESPECIALLY so)
I think he displayed many positive qualities at other times, but like
just looking at her reaction
it seemed like, joking or not, in that moment he took aim at her hard-won lady-in-a-misogynist-world more-badass-than-you cred and shot it out from under her.
and she got it BACK afterward, because she is AWESOME, but the look on her face and the way she was all "Here are the many practical reasons why he is flying this plane!" read to me as... I don't even know the word, but it did not inspire warm feelings towards Howard Stark in me. :(
I interpreted that scene as a sort of not-so-happy back and forth that has happened more than once. Howard Stark thinks he's awesomesauce and generally is but not as much as he thinks he is, and wants to get into her pants, and continually attempts so, and she keeps telling him to fuck off.
Which.... douchey, yeah. But it was kind of a one-large-moment-of-douche instead of Lots Of Douche.
idk. I think it also depends which Tony you're comparing him to - Tony from the beginning of the first movie outshines his father's douchery, but I think Tony from the end of the second has started to break a lot of those bad habits. From what I've seen of Howard, he never did. XD
Again, it seems to be a thing with Howard being a second/third-string character instead of the main. I'm betting that Howard did his growing up when he got married and had Tony, what with the images that we see of him in the Iron Man movies.
He wasn't the BEST dad but he seems more responsible.
THE BIG CAVEAT! Given the era culture differences, Steve is still going to think that Tony is a giant bag of asshole. In my mind. I really can't wait to see it.
...And I want to know what's going on with Hulk. :< Having heard that Norton won't be reclaiming his role (basically because nobody wants to work with him twice) makes me le sad and wonder WHERE WILL HULK BE IN AVENGERS MOVIE.
From what I've read while looking into stuff, basically. He apparently likes to have a very strong hand in the creative direction of a movie, and apparently is not very good at playing nice with others. (http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/breaking-news/edward-norton-ditched-from-the-avengers-film-as-producers-criticise-actors-talent/story-e6freuyi-1225890756651)
Extra reading says there will be a Hulk, played by Mark Ruffalo. (AKA who the hell is that.)
I loved it when he and the french fellow were chatting back and forth and simply told Steve "We're in." Makes me wish I'd kept up with my French, so I could have followed the conversation.
yep, that was Gabe Jones of the Howling Commandos, led by Nick Fury when he was a sergeant.
It also had Percival "Pinky" Pinkerton, who years later they said they saw as, at the time, being gay, but at the same time the Commandos valued skill over everything else, so it didn't matter. (Having read some of the stories of the time, yeah, he was pretty much, to quote Quentin Crisp, one of the Stately Homos of Old England.)
I figured the characters in his group were canon somehow even if I never got the name. It was the fact that they put a black guy next to Steve during one of the publicity segments before he gathered up his crew that impressed me. It meant that people thought 'you might be in the same unit as a black dude!' was a perfectly okay message to put out to would-be soldiers and war bond buyers.

Date: 2011-07-23 07:13 pm (UTC)Two things I'm greatly looking forward to in The Avengers:
Tony meeting Steve. I somehow have this feeling that their personalities will clash in an awesome way.
ALL THOSE MUSCLES ON ONE SCREEN. EEEEEEEE.

Seriously Tony. At least be classy about it, like Howard. All douche gene, and 1% classy. Poor Tony.
