Some wrong number called me the other night around 11 PM. I tripped over the Xbox's power cable in the process of running for the phone- I assumed that if it was after 11 PM it was one of my friends in the Pacific time zone with some kind of medical or family emergency they had to tell me about, so I ran for the phone. Of course, it wasn't. Just a wrong number within my area code, probably a butt-dial on a delivery guy's cell phone or something.

I bring this up because said tripping appears to have jerked my Xbox at exactly the right angle to cause my Fallout New Vegas disc to be rendered unplayable. It gets to exactly the same point every time I try to start the game and tells me the disc is unreadable. I tried installing it to the hard drive and got told it was unreadable when it reached the 90% mark. I have since tried ejecting and reinserting it several times, but no joy, and I even tried watching a DVD on the Xbox to ensure that it wasn't some kind of warping to the tray going on. Still no joy. It's the disc. There's a distinct ring around the center that looks as if it might be a scratch or something- it's at the same distance for its entire circumference. That's probably whatever damage got done.

Oh, well. It was a gift, and I'm grateful for it. I'll go buy a copy now.

Ick. X-boxes have a classic 'ring of death' that they develop when exactly what you described happens. It is a pain in the neck, and IMHO, a total design flaw in the X-boxes. Having lost a disc to that in the past at the WORST POSSIBLE TIME, you have my sympathy. At least it's not like the days of SNES where all the memory is stored on the game itself (hello, power surge). ;)

DVD scratches can sometimes be polished out with toothpaste (srsly) and a soft cloth.

The special edition DVD box with no disk in it came with New Vegas casino coasters for putting under drinks. We have it here, still, and I can bring it back with me when I come for the Holidays.
