So I just bought a new bicycle helmet. The old one was still solid, but getting uncomfortable- the padding was starting to fall out in earnest, and the visor hasn't sat right since about two weeks after I bought it.

The new one looks like the day they discovered Speed Racer was actually a Cylon.

If I'm going to look like a dork- and I am, because that is the nature of bicycle helmets- I would prefer to look like a dork who is less likely to die horribly under a car's wheels. Motorists don't look for light at the level of a rear reflector or a rear clip-on light. They look for light at the level of their own eyes or a little higher, and that's where the helmet lights will be.

How well does it illuminate your path at night? Will you still need a handlebar light?

Yes, I will. The light isn't meant to be strong enough to see by, although it helps with that. It's meant to be strong enough for cars to spot you. I've already got a handlebar lighting system, although I need to replace the battery- it's rechargeable. I want this helmet more for the rear lighting than the forward, because rear lights tend to vanish in the mix of bike-rack and backpack I usually seem to have with me at night.
