Mar. 31st, 2010 01:17 amHave decided: in Half-Life 2, if City 17 is actually Newark, New Jersey? Ravenholm is the remains of Elizabeth. I went to Ikea today and decided to get off the bus and walk, mostly because I didn't have the cash to get a transfer from the driver and I couldn't find a vending machine before the bus left. I got four miles of walk in the rain. Didn't mind the wet so much, but there were some aspects of the area that made me think of Ravenholm- starting with St. Vladimir's Ukrainian Catholic Church. It was very easy to slot Father Grigori into that. The building you have to get to the roof of, the one with the fast zombies clawing at the elevator door, doesn't map out to anything that exists in the real world just at the moment, but eh. There's enough warehouses and stuff around town to tap for the part. As far as the mines go, there's no mining in the area, so I'm going to go with the assumption that the underground portion of the journey involves slogging through the remains of PSE&G utility tunnels and possibly some drainage pumping areas for the Elizabeth River (I passed one odd little riverside building that said it was a pumping station during my walk). And then there's the part where if you walk far enough you come out on Trumbull Street, which runs alongside ALL THE RAILROAD TRACKS EVER... well, there's a lot of freight train tracks, anyway, which maps out well enough to the area just after you come out of the mines. According to Google Maps there's then some warehouses and stuff- and past that? There's a detention center for people awaiting immigration status decisions. It's not named New Prospects or anything, but hell, if the Combine are arbitrarily moving people around and whatnot it'd be so very, very easy to see the name get applied sarcastically at first by some Russian or Ukrainian set to work in the area, then with deadly sincerity...
So, yeah. Ravenholm is Elizabeth, NJ. I'm good with this. That being said, four miles is longer when it is cold and wet, but at least I got to test out the mattresses and decide that I liked three of them. Not, alas, the ones offered at Everyday Low Value Prices (IKEA not being prone to sales), but they're still not all that expensive compared to what might be offered elsewhere.
*eyes psiTunes* It's playin' Orange Box music from the Half-Life games. I'm going to take that to mean it approves of my decision re: Elizabeth.
