Made my pie yesterday for Pi Day. Blueberry, despite the oxalates- I haven't had blueberry pie in a dog's age. For once in my life I took the lazy way out and used a pie crust mix instead of cutting in the butter and shortening from scratch. I swear, trying to cut the fats in is the worst part of crust making- whether I use two knives or a multi-wire-loop cutter.... Anyway. Mix crusts are kind of weak and sad by comparison with the ones I'm used to making, but they're all right. And the cornstarch I used in the filling had acceptable results considering that I had to use IQF blueberries rather than fresh ones. I'd've done apple but I just didn't want to face peeling all those apples last night. Wound up having to add cinnamon to the filling instead of my usual mace- I like mace as a spice, it's very underused- but at least I got to make one substitution I do approve of, which is demerara sugar instead of granulated white. And the lemon juice was good. Overall, acceptable pie, not my favorite but still acceptable.

Got a shipment form King Arthur Flour coming in sometime this week. Cinnamon mini baking chips, baker's dry milk, some spice measuring spoons (narrow, shallow, and rectangular, the better to fit into spice containers without having to pry things apart), and maybe one or two other things. May have to order mace at Penzey's.

Was not flooded out or anything this weekend. Just stayed home rather than visiting parents; the railway lines were swamped on Saturday and Dad and I decided that Sunday was a bad time for it, since forecasts spoke of rain coming in the afternoon and the lines were still touchy. Didn't quite materialize, but we didn't know that at the time.

Still got to sign up for the Hartford tower lime. Lordq, are you guys still open to someone bumming a place on your couch? Oh, and do you want me to bring any video games or other games up there?

That's it for now. More later, when the time change has been driven from my brain by sweet sweet caffeine.

You're welcome any time, whether you're running up a tower or just feel like escaping to the country once in a while. And its not a couch, we've got a guest room.As for games, well, I have a Wii and an Xbox360, so anything you feel needs to be inflicted, do so.

I tend to cut in butter/shortening with a potato masher. It's fun! Smoosh. Smoosh. Smooooosh.

I've destroyed two of the loop cutters. A friend of mine swears by freezing the shortening and shredding it with a box grater. I was going to try it, but then I found a pastry blender shaped like this one (http://www.kingarthurflour.com/shop/items/pastry-blender) at a local store. I haven't made pie as yet, but it's performed brilliantly for biscuits and similar tasks.

...I saw this (http://community.livejournal.com/areyouagod/18235.html) and immediately thought of you.

And of course you weren't on AIM at that moment.
