I would have
Sep. 3rd, 2002 12:22 pma lot more confidence in my school (Kean University, Union, NJ), if the 'search the site!' page didn't uniformly produce broken links. Every single item on the search results page goes to http://web1.kean.edu/(insert appropriate ending here), and you know what?
Web1.kean.edu doesn't work.
I've tried it in Mozilla and I've tried it in IE, but as far as either of my browsers knows, there is no machine that resolves to web1.kean.edu. If I delete the 1 from the URL in the search results I *usually* get the right page, but the last time I tried it on the link to the Graduate Program Calendar that was supposedly last updated on 7/25/02, I got the calendar from Summer Semester 2001. I can't seem to find a link to tell the webmaster 'it needs changing', either.
I also can't get the academic calendar or course bulletin, once I finally locate them, to open. I just installed new patches to update IE, and as a result it seems utterly unable to locate Acrobat Reader; Mozilla refuses to tell me why it won't open the page, it just claims it already has and doesn't go anywhere near Acrobat.
What all of this translates into is that I probably have my first bio-informatics class tonight, but I keep thinking I was told class begins on 5 September, that tonight is only Opening Day for the newly arrived freshlings or something. I need to find out so I know if I should head off to Dr. Chang's class around 7 (I like being there early, I get to see who's in it for the long haul with me) or not.
I'm going to go look for a phone number now, and perhaps an address to inform the school 'hey, your high-tech super wired web site is totally useless unless you have a direct link to exactly where you want to go'. And then I'm going for a quesadilla or something, 'cos it's lunchtime.
Update: Got the MIS department on the phone. The bioinformatics class isn't really their department, it's Comp Sci, but they looked it up for me anyway. Doesn't start until after 9/5, so I won't be seeing Dr. Chang until the tenth. Huzzah.

Not Helpful for Finding Class, but...
Date: 2002-09-04 02:57 am (UTC)Just put in a host name or IP address and click 'Do Stuff.'
It, in fact, Does Stuff. This (http://www.samspade.org/t/lookat?a=snugharbor.com) is what you get when you hunt for snugharbor.com, for example.
Sam Spade rocks my socks.
As for the school's malfunctioning site, I can think of several answers, mostly revolving around firewalls. Solutions tend to center on reindexing the database.
