Love my cats. Truly do.

5:30 AM, however, is not a good time for them to announce that they want feeding by chewing loudly on the nearest piece of corrugated cardboard and meowing in my ear.

Seldom have I had two hours of such marvellous sleep as I did when I led them out of my bedroom, then closed the door on them and went back to bed. Even with their 'mew? Mew? Mewwww....' voices audible through the door and Shula's dogged attempt to get the kittyflap to work despite my having pushed a large heavy plastic tub in front of it.

(They got fed later, when I got up for real, at 7:30. The day after a race is not a good day to presume Mommy is feeling indulgent.)

Oh, cats.

I'm about to go to bed myself, and I know that mine will start protesting.

We pretty much have a regular Cat Eviction Time* in the wee hours of every morning. Followed at 6:30 by Janewt Throws Something at the Door to Make the Cats Stop Scratching At It Time, and then at 6:45 by the long-awaited My Husband Gets Up to Feed the Cats Time.

* I lie, there are two Cat Eviction Times. One of them when Timmy starts loudly licking the plastic dresser next to my husband's head, and the other when Erlend wakes up from his upstairs overnight nap and wants to leave for his downstairs pre-breakfast nap.

*nodnod* oh pets.

I was dutifully informed by Gage this morning that I will never sleep again late, ever, unless somebody else is home.

WHAT is with the plastic licking? One of my boys does it too. Plastic garbage cans, and especially LAUNDRY baskets. I just don't get it!

Heck if I know. I'm tempted to think it's the acoustics (RASP RASP RASP), but that implies a certain amount of vicious intent...which, come to think of it, doesn't sound so unlikely.

For my boy, not quite the same. He does it whenever he gets the feel, which usually isn't when I'm trying to sleep. He just seems to loooooove the flavour, or the feeling, because he closes his eyes, gets all into it.

Pixel has started expressing her vocal displeasure if we sleep past about 9am on the weekends, and lets us know this with a steady stream of MROWWW...MROWWW? MROWWWWW! MROWWWWWWWWWWWW!?!?! until we throw something at the door. Then she skitters away and comes back in 3 minutes.

Hee. I know what you mean--joking aside, there's definitely something about plastic that they really seem to groove on.
