1. I've deliberately stuck my unprotected hand into the Yukon River within days of the year's first snowfall.

2. I've had LASIK without Valium or any other kind of tranquilizer, only a local anesthetic on my eyeballs- and it didn't work on one of them.

3. I've ridden an ambulance by standing on the rear bumper and holding onto the external handle to escape from potentially collapsing buildings.

I've done the LASIK without tranquilizers, just local. It sorta worked on my eyes. They're certainly better than they were.

Oh, cool. It worked very well for me- 20/400 went to 20/15 within a few days, and stayed there for years. Pretty sure I"m standard 20/20 now, but nine years after the fact I'm not gonna kvetch.

I think I'm at about 20/50 now. It lasted for about 5 years without problems, but staring at computer screens all day seems to have strained them a bit. I can get around without my glasses, but I don't drive without them. Which is tons better than the 20/1000 that I had before.

I was on a trip to the Arctic Circle in Alaska, and we went over the one bridge in the state that crosses the Yukon. They pulled us over at the far side and let us take pictures. I went down to the river and stuck my hand in up to the first knuckle just to say I did it.

That's a SPECIAL kind of cold. I'd never felt anything that was so cold that it couldn't hurt before.

I've done #2 as well.

Here's three from me.

1. I walked on the Great Wall for a day without seeing anyone else except for the 4 people I went with. (and this won't really be unique to my friend's list because two of the people on my lj friends list were with me, but it's still way cool.)

2. I rappelled three hundred feet through a jungle canopy into a cave. (Again, someone on my friends list with me.)

3. One of my knitting designs made a national magazine cover. (That I did on my own. :)

What's the story behind #3? It sounds interesting.

I used to work for the Red Cross as my paid employment. I was assigned mass care duty in lower Manhattan on 9/11 and 9/12. The ambulance in question was a Red Cross emergency response vehicle; we'd been using it to distribute food to the rescue workers, cops, soldiers, etc. On 9/12 we were parked within a few blocks of the Great Big Hole when I stepped out of the vehicle to stretch my legs. Just then several guys in hard hats came running up the street where we were parked, shouting that #1 Liberty Plaza was starting to buckle and that I'd better run. I ran, though I almost tried to go back for the truck. A few minutes after I got to the nearest line of police, one of the other Red Cross workers came zooming out of the alley, driving the truck. Unfortunately there were about half a dozen other Red Cross people in it and a lot of supplies, so we couldn't get the doors open to let me in, but they were still saying we had to move fast. I wound up jumping on the bumper and holding onto the handle on the left side of the thing's back end (it'd been installed for getting up and down from the bumper with ease, or possibly for similar situations- I mean a handle meant to hang onto, not to open the door with). I wound up hanging there until we got from that area to Wall Street.
