Today may not have been the best day to go for distance on Chromia (my bike). Chromia weighs twenty-six pounds. I opted to bring my laptop in its backpack, along with my chain so that I could stop at a Starbucks if I needed a rest. The chain weighs twelve pounds and the laptop has a seventeen inch screen, so it weighs a bit. The backpack is padded and covers the entire back.

The last thermometer I saw said ninety nine degrees F.

Nevertheless I have achieved fourteen miles so far.

You are a far hardier soul than I. It's only about 85 degrees here, and yet the only venturing I did was in the safety and air conditioning of my Elantra (yeah, I did kind of need her with me to get her tires rotated and her fuel system cleaned out, but still . . . )

I take a certain amount of pride in doing things the stupidly hard way, just to say that I can. Once I've done that, then I do things nice and simple.

Have you thought of getting a rear rack and panniers, and carrying the laptop on the bike instead of on your back? Or is that an invitation to laptop thieves in Jersey and New York?

I have a rear rack, but I prefer putting the laptop in the backpack; even with gazillions of bungee cords I worry about the laptop falling off. As far as panniers go, I'll probably get them eventually, once I figure out how to attach them with the disc brakes and the hub and all.

My panniers attach to the Blackburn-style rack, not to the frame ... but I've no idea how your rack attaches to that rather unorthodox frame of yours.

The rack is only attached to the seatpost, not to the frame in any other way.
