While I"m very happy for the Milliways players who play modernish versions of Greek gods, I've been realizing the past few days... it makes it really hard to play Hektor. I'm playing him from Mary Renault's universe, so it's a realistic depiction of the Bronze Age, and suddenly the Bar is full of gods. Not all of them, to be sure, but lots and lots of gods. Hektor is from a time in history before the gods were neatly codified into 'here are the twelve who really matter, and here are the entirely separate others, and here are this and that and the other thing'. He's from a world where godly intervention, if it comes at all, is a deeply personal thing that only a few can genuinely identify. Having one or two gods around- Hephaestos, a Titan or two- that's fine. Having gods left, right, and center? That's more divine power than his universe is ready for, and I don't think I can play him while the gods are running rampant. His world is about the humans, not about the gods.

I'm going to let him lay low for a while and see how long the mythology phase lasts. He'll be in Dardania, killing pirates.

So, I play a Kara Thrace elsewhere, and if suddenly all the Greeks were to show up at once in her game? Yeahhhh, probably the same level of not good. I sympathize, despite having been tempted once or twice to pick up a Greek god myself.

Yeah, I'm sort of looking at the Greek influx sideways and then rolling my eyes. Half of them will get bored and the characters will get idled in a few months. Ah well!

Ah, well. I'll live. (And Hektor gets to spend that much longer not getting any closer to Achilles putting a spear through his neck.)

Yeah. I've planned from the beginning that Hektor's going to die his canon death. I'm not going to use Milliways to change that. Maybe to get some of the Trojan women and civilians out of the city, but Hektor will die exactly as his canon had him go.
