I'm back in the office and working on getting the bosslady's email to do what it's supposed to do. Woo, huzzah, etc. Still coughing like a mofo, but a, I'm not in an area where I'd be coughing on people, and b, I brought what's left of my bag of Luden's cough drops with me, so that should shut it up at least for a little while.

I dreamed last night that one of my coworkers asked me for the first real landmark that I think of when I think of New York City. I said the Hellgate Bridge, and told him that it would be a landmark for a very long time; alone of all the bridges in New York it's built such that it'll still be there in recognizable form a thousand years from now. This much is true, so far as I know (there was a Discover magazine article in 2005 that mentioned it, I think), but... honestly, I'm a little surprised that that's the first landmark I thought of. Hell, I'm surprised it's the first bridge I thought of, given that my great-grandfather was one of the workers on the Triboro back in the WPA days. On the other hand, if you came down Ditmars Boulevard to 21st Street, which was where you got the El (it's not the subway if it has to be put up on an elevated trestle), you could see the Hellgate from a ways off. You had to go alongside the Grand Central Parkway to see the Triboro. More often than not as a kid, I saw the Hellgate that way...

I don't know. It's a railroad bridge and I think in all my life I can remember going over it once, on an Amtrak liner of some kind. I always wondered what it'd be like to go over on foot or on a bicycle. Maybe that's it, maybe not- I don't know.

Just sayin'.
