Via [livejournal.com profile] telophase:

Check it out, Disney's actually doing 2D again. And they're doing it with an African-American princess.

Love 2D. Love the overdue idea of an African American lead. Love using Randy Newman.

Not sure about updating the story. But is Lasseter is involved in the least, it should work.

You know that Lasseter said almost immediately after the merger that he wanted to see 2D again?

But there aren't any princesses in America, unless you count the one in Enchanted!

As a long-time Disney girl, I find it really sort of interesting that this is what's kicking up all the interest, rather than the Asian heroine (Mulan), Pacific Islanders (Lilo and Nani), Romany (Esmerelda), Middle Eastern (Jasmine), Native American (Pocahontas), Indian Subcontinent (all the humans in The Jungle Book), unknown descent but looked sorta like a Storm clone (Kida), interracial relationships (Esmerelda and Phobos, Milo and Kida)...

Dunno.

See, that, I can see. I'm just seeing a really surreal number of people (and have been seeing) making this out to be a racial thing, when they've actually just had a tendency to focus on the European stories. Even now, taken a European fairy tale and altered it to fit a new setting and style, so that we could have the African-American Princess. Which is awesome. It's just sort of like the people complaining about Pocahontas for breaking history, y'know?

I remember there being some similar fuss about Mulan and Pocahontas.
