So I ordered the new bike last night at Chelsea Bikes. They said they'd call today and let me know when they had a time frame of availability from the manufacturers, and whether any of the options would be delayed. I'll put down a deposit then and pay them the rest when the bike arrives.

Options I'm getting: front and rear disc brakes, gearbox upgrade to a Shimano Alfine 8-speed, grease gun kit for lubing the shaft drive, rear carrier for saddlebags (panniers, whatever) and flat cargo, bike computer (odometer/clock/calories type- I'm not enough of a geek to want a proper computer when I'm in the saddle), puncture resistant tires. I'll buy a better seat separately if the one it comes with is insufficiently acceptable. I will be buying the Kryptonite New York locks separately once I've seen what my options are for the Fuhgettaboutit U-lock versus their other New York-rated U-locks. Definitely getting a good-length New York chain, though. Part of the reason I didn't chain my other bike directly in front of/on the side of The Strand is because the Strand's bike stand was too full for me to lock up there without entangling other bikes, and my chain wasn't long enough to hook the bike to the lamp post directly in front of the bookstore thanks to all the *!&)(!&*)(! free newspaper boxes in the immediate vicinity. A longer chain, even if expensive, would allow a few more options- and would probably also allow passage through one or both wheels as well as the body frame when I locked it to a smaller post or rack.

Still not really up to the point of a true compassionate response to the thief, but now I'm on the only-mildly-annoyed stage, and the urge to ask why he or she did that. I'd probably be contemptuous if I was told it was for drug money, but I think at this point I can safely say that I'd just roll my eyes instead of calling them names.

Working on getting better.

Ye ghads, I'm behind!

*huggles*

So sorry about the bike, Cam. Good for you on trying to be compassionate, but don't strain yourself doing it.

Catching up, myself. Way sorry about the bike. I had mine swiped when I lived up in Northampton, and I remember the suckitude well. Good practice with the compassion.
