Oct. 11th, 2007 11:12 amBefore I run Frozen Horrors, Frozen North, Ray is going to have to deal with his usual October nonsense, beginning with the consequences of a stolen truck and a string of identity thefts. I don't intend to start Frozen Horrors, Frozen North until after that plot's dealt with, so FHFN isn't going to start until early November. however, if you're interested, I have some ideas here for those of you who'd like to do more than just zap disgusting things or run away screaming.
(That's not intended as a slight on anyone or any plot. 'Zapping disgusting things' and 'running away screaming' constitute a lot of what goes on during a typical day on the job in October for Ray, along with 'making fun of New Jersey'.)
The focus of the plot is the struggle between the humans of Earth (and their allies) and the paradimensional beings of the Cthulhu Mythos for control of the hidden city at Earth's magnetic poles. Under the right conditions, the City can be reached and used to access and attack, and maybe even control, countless other Earths throughout existence. One such set of right conditions is going to fall into place very soon in a number of worlds, which means that the Great Old Ones will be emerging left, right, and center to do battle with anyone or anything that stands in their way. Earth, for the most part, is badly outclassed by the Old Ones and their minions, but in fourteen worlds (chosen largely because 'fourteen' is a funny number to say) there are at least a handful of people who are aware of the magnitude of the threat and have been struggling to set up at least initial efforts to hold the Old Ones off. They're the Canadian Ministry of Extraordinary Threats, their current head is a man named Benton Fraser, and they've existed since roughly 1895.
This is where you come in.
If you want to have your character's world be one of the worlds that has a Ministry of Extraordinary Threats, let me know. This will mean your world has at least some contact with, or influence from, the Cthulhu Mythos. The degree to which the Great Old Ones are capable of influencing or intruding upon your world is up to you, since not everywhere in the multiverse has the same dimensional integrity (Discworld, for example, has some seriously weak walls-o-reality according to its early canon). The Fourteen Ministries will all be converging upon a single world- Milliways Ray's- as part of their plan to alert as many worlds as they can reach to the threat that's coming. The tack to be taken afterwards will depend entirely on what comes of the huge emergency UN meeting that'll be called in response. Hopefully, it will include Arctic exploration and mayhem enough to satisfy all y'all- and if you want your character to go temporarily insane or otherwise have his/her/its head messed up for some reason? We can totally do that too! Heck, if you wanna have your pup try to spike the wheel by throwing in with the Great Old Ones we can also do that, since, well, sometimes people do things that aren't in the survival interests of all existence.
That being said, be aware that I've been reading the following Mythos stories in search of inspiration and preparation material for this plot:
The Dunwich Horror
At The Mountains Of Madness
The Color Out Of Space
Beyond The Wall Of Sleep
The Silver Key
The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath
The Call of Cthulhu
The Space-Eaters
The Hounds of Tindalos
... and of course the Michael Reaves Real Ghostbusters episode "Collect Call of Cathulhu". No, that's not a misspelling, that's how it reads on the title card. Also the episode "Russian About", although that one was badly affected by several years' worth of ABC's insistence on 'make it less scary so it'll be more suitable for children!', so it's not nearly as good.

Date: 2007-10-11 04:00 pm (UTC)Kirk is the only possible pup I could use for this, even though I am not entirely sure that Lovecraftian mythos mesh at all well with the TrekVerse. But Shatner is Canadian, after all.
We shall discuss, yesno?

Date: 2007-10-11 05:31 pm (UTC)Cam, I don't think I've actually got any pups who would work for the Fourteen Ministries thing - two of them I'd have to ask other muns and one of them's Bound - but I'd love to actually participate in this plot, since I unfortunately missed Mad Paleontologist. (Tilda is still ticked off at me for this. She wants to meet Ecto, especially now that Ecto is occasionally a giant robot. Possibly she has been spending too much time around Enzo Matrix for her own good.)

Date: 2007-10-11 05:35 pm (UTC)Although the idea of having to pry Tilda out of the Mythos-derived Bucket of Ick some of those books would put her in is kind of interesting.
Anyway. She can get in on that, but if you want, Walter Peck and the Raiders of the Lost Warehouse is going to be starting quite soon. I can guarantee plagues of mice as well as Ecto for that! Either plot or both, up to you.

Date: 2007-10-11 05:39 pm (UTC)I will tentatively say "yes! Chucking her at both!", and then cross my fingers and hope my brain doesn't fail me again.
As long as it can be guaranteed that she will be pried out with minimal psychological damage, I'm all for having her read books that read her right back. And if not, I can always throw Raspberry at that plot instead, for much brash vulgarity and punching things inna face.

Date: 2007-10-11 05:45 pm (UTC)Tilda would totally be up for that. She has fond memories of the first time she blew things up in the name of Walter Peck Is An Asshole.

Blue Light Special! :D!

Ace'll just be over here in the corner with her happy drugs and alcohol, wondering when the extra weird factor got added to her life.

or a psychic who's had some Millicanon experience with Mythos (he'll be more wary this time as result. Heh), I can offer Johnny Smith.
Also a Kate Bishop if you need more help on the fighting end. I'm flexible on assistance.

Date: 2007-10-11 09:06 pm (UTC)(Moiraine is a special case whose world isn't affected, but because of the nature of the special caseness -- yeah, I don't think that'll help so much. Except possibly for small amounts of IC research support, if needed.)
All of that said... if you need a Lovecraft-familiar NPC runner? Please keep me in mind. :)

My experience with the Mythos is a little superficial, but if you need Northern NPCs, lemme know. I can always increase my experience with the Mythos. :D
