Well, thanks to a new picture book and CD edition of "Puff the Magic Dragon", Major Thomas Condon Hogarth, RAF, and Father Eugene Mackenzie, MI6, have a new companion in my head.

Captain John "Jackie" Paper, of Delta Airlines' commercial pilot corps.

A 747 isn't quite a dragon, per se, but you know? It'll do.

I grew up directly under the flight path for La Guardia Airport's Marine Air Terminal. We lived a little over a mile away from the edge of the airport. My father used to take me down to the Marine Air Terminal to watch planes take off and land after church. All- all- of the airplanes in pictures that I drew before about age twelve either had their landing gear down, or were seaplanes, because that's what took off and landed where I could see it every single day. The roar of jet engines DIRECTLY OVER YOUR HEAD is pretty nearly the defining sound of my childhood, so I don't see where Jackie couldn't grow up and go into Coast Guard aviation for a few years, then return to civilian life and fly jets and still feel connected to Puff in his past.

Diane Duane used to have a picture up on her site for Middle Kingdoms Air, where people went by dragon instead of by plane, mostly. It ended with a note to the effect of "and please don't tease the 747s about their size. They're sensitive enough as it is."
