Jul. 17th, 2007 11:26 amThere is a prehistoric, nasty, bone-crunchy predatory beast called Sarkastodon. It's huge. It's one of the two lead competitors for 'biggest terrestrial mammalian predator ever'.
Is it wrong of me to fall in love with an obscure mammal based solely on its name? Sarkastodon! Snarkiest predator ever to roam the plains of ancient Mongolia!

Date: 2007-07-17 03:39 pm (UTC)I have no idea what the woman is supposed to be doing in that picture other than offering an idea of the scale of the beast. The web page I found it on is written entirely in Chinese except for the Latin names of the animals depicted. It's the best picture I can find of the thing, since most of the fossils are in Mongolia or something.

Date: 2007-07-19 12:03 pm (UTC)I'll fix it later. It's sort of a bear thing with a raccoon style tail and a head made for crunching, with its back being about level with a Chinese woman's nose.

Date: 2007-07-17 05:37 pm (UTC)I saw one of these at the Long Beach Aquarium this weekend and filed the name with the Shasta and Hansen Ground Sloths and the Fragile Eagle, all of which are megafauna that have been found around the La Brea Tar Pits. The sloths clearly are named for the sodas that were part of their regular diet, and I think the eagle might still be in existence if someone had just given it a hug and told it that things were going to be okay.
