Is there precedent in the Buffyverse for a living human being to be separated from his or her soul without being turned into a vampire, or indications that such a thing might be possible?

.... what? I'm a GM, we're evil on general principle.

There may have been some astral projection?

Other than that, I think we're talking 'death'.

I think the idea is there has to be something animating a body at all times, be it a soul or a demon or a god. You can have more than one, but if you have none, you'll just have an empty, inanimate shell.

This sounds vaguely reminiscent of the Star Trek episode where they stole Spock's brain....

Yes, there is -- "Living Conditions," and there's a boy on AtS born without a soul.

Can I grab your icon to send to my naturally blonde sister who collects 'blonde' jokes (how do you get a blonde to commit suicide? Put a mirror on the bottom of a swimming pool)??

Uh, sure. It's just a T-shirt slogan on a picture of me, though.

Absolutely cool. I am *impressed* at a) you being able to take a t-shirt slogan and put it on top of a photo of you, and b) you being able to make an icon of it. I don't have these skills: I steal from others (with permission if possible). My sister is going to *love* this. Thanks!

Which one? I looked up the AtS episode, and it's called "I Got You Under My Skin" -- 1x14. I don't remember it being anywhere near as awesome as an episode about a boy without a soul should've been.

I think "Living Conditions" is hilarious, though. I am possibly the only one.

I don't know about Buffy, but there was an episode of the Simpsons where Bart sold his soul to his best friend--hilarity ensued. =D?

Bought a soul from the most superstitious and dimwitted friend I had. He was freaking out and desperately asking for "it" back by the end of the day.

Actually, Angel's soul curse was independent of his vampirism, as far as I know. Well, perhaps not in a technical sense, because if he hadn't been a vampire, he would have had a soul and they wouldn't have had need to curse him with one, but the spell itself wasn't dependent on him being a vampire.

There was a lot of soul losing/soul having back and forth on both Buffy and Angel for Angel. In Episode 3-17 of Buffy, Faith and the Mayor conspire to steal Angel's soul non-happy-moment having using a very creepy demon. I'll leave out the outcome because it's spoilery, but no matter how it ended, it's pretty clear that the demon they used had the power to take Angel's soul. :)

There was the episode where Xander was split into two people (Good Xander and Lame Xander) which seems to indicate that it's possible.

And various occurences in other episodes where they were variously seperated, transformed or changed (Willow into a ghost, Buffy put into a transformative state, Dawn created, etc etc etc).

I don't remember the episode of ATS that shati mentions, but given how wibbly-wobbly BtVScanon has been about what a soul actually is, I think you'd be okay with anything you might want to do.

...Canon-wise, she adds hastily.

The AtS one is 1x14, "I Got You Under My Skin," apparently. It was actually surprisingly consistent with Buffy's behavior while losing her soul! -- Possibly 'cause the episodes would've aired the same year.
