camwynThings learned today:
- Athletic sandals of about half a size larger than you really need make excellent bicycle shoes and do not necessarily leave shoe bites if you fasten them properly.
- There are a LOT of red-winged blackbirds on eastern Long Island, but not very many dragonflies.
- The flattest century miles on the East Coast still includes a section that goes through Hither Hills State Park. They ain't kiddin' with a name like that.
- The universe is sadistic, because Hither Hills State Park lies at approximately mile 97.
- The ride organizers are sadistic, because they figured out how to get an extra twenty miles out of the distance between Babylon and Montauk... and added three more.
- If you fill your hydration backpack all the way up to the locking bit you will get leaks, and then your turn sheet will go all to pieces, and you had BETTER keep an eye out for the paint marks on the road.
- Also, the telephone company on Long Island uses the same markings, and nearly the same colour paint, as the Ride to Montauk organizers. The difference is that the Ride marks mean 'you have to turn this way up ahead'. The phone company markings mean 'OH LOOK A PHONE POLE'. Do not mistake one for the other.
- Guys really want to know about chainless bicycles. I swear, I got asked how the bike worked by six different men. No, I'm not being sexist. Women didn't ask.
