Six thirtyish AM. I'm at Church and Thomas with a bunch of riders, waiting for the Tour to start. The starting gun goes off at eight AM. I might just have a prayer of moving before nine this time.

I am envious. Despite getting up at 4:30, the Staten Island ferry was so clogged we still didn't get to the formation until 8:00. And thus, we missed Astoria, yet again. Bleah.

Oh, gross. I'm sorry to hear that. Missing part of a big ride like this is never fun. I almost had that happen with the Harlem Valley Rail ride last year- I arrived at the second bus less than a minute before they were supposed to leave and only got to go because there was still room under the bus for one more bike. (I'd missed the PATH train by five minutes and they only ran every twenty minutes at that time of morning, so... yeah.)

It's frustrating. We come from out of town, and unless we want to shell out massive moolah to stay in a Manhattan hotel, it's almost impossible to get to the lineup early enough, and from there it's just too hard to make up time before they close the loop.

Yeah, the best you can really do is find a berth in one of the youth hostels, preferably one that offers bike storage space- some of them do. Granted, you still have to book those up early, but you're dealing with something like $25 a night for a bed to stay in and a place to stash your stuff. Not like you need much in the way of amenities if you're going to be spending all day in the saddle.
