What American accent do you have?

New York City. You are most definitely from New York City. Not New Jersey, not Connecticut. If you are from Jersey then you can probably get into New York City in 10 minutes or less.

Take this quiz now - it's easy!
We're going to start with "cot" and "caught." When you say those words do they sound the same or different?

*snort* All that effort I put into making my speech difficult to regionally place, and a crummy 17-question quiz can pin it anyway...

I've lived in Toronto for 40 years and it still pegs me as born in Connecticut. (Raised in Florida didn't happen to my accent.)

Huh. I am apparently both Midland _and_ Southern at the same time. I've never seen one of these quizzes give a result like _that_ before. It's probably a pretty accurate way to describe me, though.

It gave me three answers. I am from the Midlands, and the South, and Canada.

The linguistic parameters for this are definitely not very rigorous - but there are certain speech phonemes that are very distinctive shibboleths for certain regional dialects - they are questioning and categorising you on that alone - so if you have that ONE distinctive feature, they figure they've got you nailed. Rather like that otherwise totally forgettable film about the American bomber pilot who crashes his plane in Germany during WWII and is drugged and brain washed into believing he is 'home' with his 'wife' until the girl uses a distinctively German phoneme. You can't really say which dialect a person speaks based on only one phoneme.
