I will probably do a more serious entry later on today or tonight, or at least a more writing-based one if nothing else, but right now I'm just throwing thoughts out there. Or at least one thought, namely:

It'd be kind of cool to have a voice acting job where you recorded screams for various scare sound effects. You'd get a royalty check in the mail every so often for fifty cents or a couple of dollars, and you'd know: somewhere out there, I'm screaming my lungs out. Or you'd turn on the radio while you were on your way to some other job, or getting the morning cereal, or cleaning out the litterbox, and you'd hear "AIEEEEEE!" in a commercial. And you'd think: not my best work, but I really do sound spooked, don't I? Or you'd turn on a TV show and you'd hear a patched-in scream that just didn't measure up, and you'd think: amateur.

I don't know. I just think it'd be kind of cool.

That sounds like a short story kicking and, er, screaming to emerge from that premise.

I worked as the office manager for a video production company for a while. At one point one of the other staffers asked some of us to help her out and scream for her answering machine message (it was October). She said I had a very good scream.

I've often thought that voice acting might be a fun thing to do. Maybe when I'm older, and arthritis prevents me from playing guitar or bass, and gin has sandpapered my vocal cords a bit more, then I'll go into training for those really DEEP VOICE parts, the ones that they do in movie shorts that make the theater's sub-bass go up your spine.

Or something kinda hip and out there, like Ken Nordine. I love Ken Nordine's voice.

There was that disney compilation about fifteen years ago, "Stay Awake" that had Ken do a really twisted spoken word version of "An Actor's Life For Me" where over the cheery hi-diddle-dee-dee music he did not utter, he rumbled: "Who was it that said:'Damn it all. Damn everything... but the circus."

I got as far, once, as researching scream queens and what it takes to be one. Honestly, the reason I never actually called in for the scream-queen audition that was done around here about six years ago was that I found out just how bad it is on the vocal cords after a while.

But, man. Sometimes I still wish I had.
