No. We were planning on buying another machine to be primary controller and this machine to become secondary.

ugh...bad situation. If nothing else, I turn a desktop into a second DC/GC JUST in case, even for a network so small that they have no need for a second DC. Much easier to dcpromo something if you still have a live DC.

Its not ideal, but its a heckofa lot easier to recover from. How big is your network?

35 users. About fifty machines total.

Yeh, thats about right for a desktop backup then. I've got a 50 user 50PC and 6 server network with a primary DC and a desktop as a DC in a corner that I have not touched except to periodicly be sure its still turned on, and they handle the load fine.

I have decided that my MCSE specialisation is going to be in Active DIrectory. Sod SQL. AD has given me more trouble. I will beat it to death WITH MY TEETH.
