I finished my first skein of yarn! Wound it into two balls today.



I don't think I'm gonna make a Jayne hat with this stuff. Maybe a scarf- just adding squares as I get more spun in different colors- but not a Jayne hat.

What's a 'Jayne' hat?

Nice yarn - you spun it yourself? I like the varying thicknesses. I don't spin - I'm a dyer and a weaver - I would of course use such yarn to add texture to a wall hanging or a bedcover/throw. Let us see what you make of it!

It's an orange, yellow, and red hat with ear flaps and a pom-pom, named after the hat given to the character Jayne Cobb in an episode of Firefly. Jayne's mother knitted it for him so he wouldn't be cold out in space, and it's painfully evident upon seeing the hat that Jayne's mom is not much of a knitter, but Jayne thinks the hat is just about the greatest thing since alcohol and wears it anyway.

Congratulations for your yarn balls. I tried to do it once with cotton but I didn't produce an inch -too much difficult.

I'm working on spinning some red yarn with a different kind of sheep's wool, and then I've got some more roving in other colors to work with- a little yellow and a lot of undyed.

My aunt says she thinks I was born at the wrong time, but a little extra low-tech survival skill never really hurt anyone.

I've still got the lovely roving you sent me. I haven't found anything fitting to comb it out with so it can get spun. I really -should- start doing that again, it was so relaxing.

I got a wheel last Christmas and haven't really been able to spin much at all, but it calls to me every day.

I'm blessed to live in sheep country with sheep friends. I can run down to the little store in the next town, chat with Linda, buy roving by the grocery bag and then go out the back and meet the sheep it came from. My daughter and I then dye it with Knitpicks dye in my bathroom and spin it up. So far, we've just got some lumpy balls of wildly varigated stuff that will be ridiculously pill-y and not really enough to make anything. (Certainly nothing attractive.) But it sure is fun!
