Ooo, I do like that one. Okay, I like almost all of them, but I think that Lurker and Colour Out of Space were the first two stories of his that I ever read.
Colour Out of Space made me so happy. All I could think reading it was, "DUDE. Lovecraft TOTALLY pegged the results of ionizing radiation. Totally. SENTIENT ATOMIC RADIATION. DUDE." And then I bounced around a lot in a squeeful sort of way.
Hee hee heeeee. I believe my reaction was more along the lines of "Glee hee color made people die, heh." but I was twelve or so at the time. The Rats In The Walls is another favorite from that time.
*coughs embarrassedly* When I was in college I did some fairly extensive private studying of the effects of ionizing radiation on both humans and other biological entities. I said it was because a friend of mine had been exposed to it during his mother's pregnancy and I wanted to know about possible long term effects, but really it was me indulging my 'must acquire morbid freakish medical knowledge' side. An aunt of mine gave me a very extensive government report on the aftereffects of Hiroshima, and on other ionizing radiation tests under far more controlled conditions. Virtually every single effect, including the 'it gets big and pretty looking but AUGH FREAK TASTE AND TEXTURE' one, has been documented as happening to animals and plants alike whose parents were exposed to sufficient radiation. Colour out of Space was just EEEEEEEEEEE MY MEDICAL RESEARCH FINALLY PAID OFF because of it.
Alas, I lost it in the transition from college back to New Jersey somewhere along the line, or else I would. I don't even remember the name of the report.
My two trips over the pass on the way to Seattle (because, of course, going two hours north before going south makes sense) the bus broke down. The second time it broke down with no working heat in below-freezing weather when I was sick. You're insulting the ratbastards, they deserve better than that comparison.
