For those of you not familiar with bicycling terminology, a century is a 100-mile bike ride, the cycling world's equivalent of a marathon. The Century Tour also has other routes- 100, 75, 55, 35 and 15 mile routes- but I promised myself I'd do a century by September.

I, um, may be spending a lot of weekends cursing about my undercarriage this summer.

ETA: Almost forgot. Just registered for the Tour de Brooklyn, as that'll be on Sunday. 18 miles. Turn up at 8:30, line up at 9, ride at 9:30. Should be fun.

Congratulations! You'll find, I think, that given the right equipment and lots of practice a century is not anywhere near as hard as a marathon. I've done a few centuries, I cannot see myself running a marathon. Ever.

Just make sure you're on the right bike for the trip; you'll want to get the gear ranges right for the terrain, for example. (I did my first on a Pugeot Classique which I had upgraded with a Sturmey-Archer 5-speed rear hub ... not enough gear selection, and what there was was too big. Chondromalacia of the right patella.) And make sure your chosen steed is all lubed up, etc.

I'll reserve the day with various foodstuffs that can be eaten with minimal need to actually sit.

Just in case.
