camwyn cwru: ......
xienhua: ?
camwyn cwru: oh , this is bad. I really don't need to be able to link the events of "Egon's Dragon" to an actual usable Slavic deity.
xienhua: ohboy
camwyn cwru: Veles, Volos, Weles, or Voloh is a major Slavic god of earth, waters and the Underworld.
camwyn cwru: He is associated with dragons, cattle, magic, musicians, wealth and trickery.
xienhua: *snrk*
camwyn cwru: I mean- you don't normally get that kind of association. Hermes? Not associated with dragons, nor is he an earth god or a god of water. Poseidon? God of bulls and water and shaker of earth, but not so much with the magic or the musicians or the trickery or the wealth.
xienhua: at least it's not Volosdemort or something
camwyn cwru: .... I hadn't thought of that, but yeah.
xienhua: ....I apologize
camwyn cwru: It's okay.
camwyn cwru: I was mostly picturing an argument with a dead ancestor. "I thought you said we were Jewish!" "Yes, well.... do you know how long it took Judaism to get itself established in any of the Slavic countries? Easiest way to win the populace over? Marry their daughters. Even the shamans' and priests'."
xienhua: *grin*
camwyn cwru: "We go back a really long way, Egon. A really, really long way."
camwyn cwru: *squints at more of the information* Huh.
camwyn cwru: 'In fact, in many of the Russian folk tales, Veles, appearing under the Christian guise of St. Nicholas, saves the poor farmer and his cattle from furious and destructive St. Elias the Thunderer, who, of course, represent the old Perun. '
xienhua: !
xienhua: good grief.
xienhua: ...so the reason that the Dragon was released was punishment for imprisoning the Three Ghosts by Santa?
camwyn cwru: That's not so much what I'm going 'huh' about. It's more that the episode 'If I Were A Witch Man' talks about an entity that had been bound by another of Egon's ancestors, one who happened to have been named Eli.
xienhua: o.o
camwyn cwru: Somebody's got more conflict in his family tree than is really entirely healthy.
xienhua: oh yes
camwyn cwru: But damn this has interesting implications for "Who Ya Gonna Owl"....
xienhua: hee
camwyn cwru: I could just see the look on his face when he got about a third of his way through his project to Read Every Single Book In The Durmstrang Library. "Wait... what?"
xienhua: well, it does explain the Crack Of Doom Voice so very well
camwyn cwru: Damn straight it does.
camwyn cwru: ... actually, no. The names wouldn't have meant that much to him when he was at Durmstrang. But when the dragon incident happened- "Wait. This isn't any species of dragon that we learned about at school. Why does this all seem familiar?"
camwyn cwru: *goes back, looks in books* *coughs* *runs hand over face*

(NB: This pertains to an episode of the Real Ghostbusters cartoon. In "Egon's Dragon", Egon's Colonial-era ancestor Zedekiah Spengler tries to magically get water from a well using a musical spell, and summons a dragon that brings him his fellow farmers' cattle and pigs instead. Then the dragon has to be put back down the well and put to sleep using the same notes in the musical incantation, but because of its size, the proton packs have to be tuned to emit the right frequencies.)

. . . I was going to comment with a "Squee, why is there no DVD I did not appreciate this enough when I was a kid" even though I think I was between four and six when I first enjoyed it, mostly just retaining the theme song.

Then, on an impulse, I decided to check Amazon.

Wanna guess what just showed up on my reccomendations page?

. . . it's not as good when you read the details. ". . . built a considerable fan base for the series, which continues (in cyberspace) to this day; however, said audience might not be too thrilled by the presentation on this disc and the two other Real Ghostbusters DVDs, which randomly compile four episodes from the show's seven seasons." But it's something, and comparing the price per episode to other cartoon DVD releases, it's about average. Enough people buy it now, they'll realize there's a good market for the entire series.
