Just a brief note, relating to RP:

Just because someone is cranky, periodically temperamental, occasionally too cheerful for his own good, and shows no signs of being weepy or sad... doesn't mean he's not depressed. Honestly, people, in men depression manifests more often as anger and aggression than as sadness and WAH.

Not that there's anything wrong with sadness and WAH, but really, that's only one possible manifestation of the psyche's response to massive mental and emotional trauma. Sometimes- heck, a lot of the time- the psyche just decides that it wants to hit something instead.

Remember, kids. Emo? Valid. ARGH? Also valid. The same root can produce entirely different symptoms.

Oh, no one's complaining. I just got a bit twitchy after going through some back posts and counting an amazingly high number of sadness and WAH responses from other male characters. I wasn't sure if anyone would even recognise what was going on with Sarge given how many other people seem to respond to loss and trauma with "I have no mouth and I must weep silently".

Between having his men killed, developing a condition he views as a step above incurable clap and a step below AIDS, and what he sees through the Door when he opens it, I'd say Sarge has reason to develop depressive responses.

Oh, and not everyone who gets PTSD comes down with the same symptom set either, dammit.

Yeah. I mean, seriously- you get the depressives, you get the twitchyviolents, you get the guys like Johnny Shellshock in The Englishman Who Went Up A Hill But Came Down A Mountain- all kinds of things, and that's just PTSD after warfare. I imagine a lot of my companions in the WTC Health Registry probably count as entirely different data points on the same theme and all we did was clean up and provide emergency (or ongoing) services and aid.

I have no idea how he came to the conclusion- possibly it's based on the implications of certain statements just before he put you-know-who out of her misery- but if anyone suggests to Sarge that lycanthropy can be cured, he's just going to laugh at them and tell them they're taking the piss.

I think a lot of women actually tend to redirect depression as anger, too. I know I can, and it seems to me that a lot of the women I work with tend to do that. Perhaps we chose to work in this job because our emotional reactions tend to be a little more like men than women's usually are? If there's some kind of an overlapping bell curve of reactions, women who work in things like security, law enforcement or the military might fall more toward the end that responds similarly to men? Do you think I could get a sociological research grant to do a study on this?

You could probably get the grant if you could either present a sizable bundle of anecdotal evidence to that effect, or wave around a statistically weird bundle of man-like MMPI results for women in those professions, I betcha.

I remember at a behavioral science noon converence, we watched scenes from Star Wars: Episode Two and diagnosed Anakin with Major Depression, Obsessive Personality Disorder with Narissistic features. And he wasn't "Woe, woe, woe" in the bits we had time to watch. :)
