The local free newspaper published a not-very-complimentary review of Serenity today. Two and a half stars and a snotty comment about how this was a grade B movie that would've been grade C if the actors hadn't been so comfortable and at home in their stock parts.

I only mention this because the review was printed on page 19.

It sounds like the reviewer is bitter he can't get a job writing for a "real" newspaper.

19 is the number of Fscked Up Coincidence in Stephen King's Dark Tower books; at milliways_bar there's recently concluded a very long, very intricate crossover plot between the Firefly characters and the Dark Tower ones.

I read that. He seems not to like SF very much in the first place. You can tell because he compares Serenity to Star Trek. Only someone who lumps all SF together would make that comparision.

Actually, this guy made it too (http://www.livejournal.com/users/theferrett/592644.html), and I think he's the biggest SF-fan on my friends list. By far. (It was a Mal vs. Picard comparison...)

Let me rephrase: he compares the film to Trek in the sense that both involve spaceships and the like, and dismisses it as more of the same. He shows only his own ignorance of Trek by doing so.

Positive Review of Serenity

Check out the review in the Oct. 3 "New York" magazine. Not just positive, but at some points waxing rapturous about it. The subtitle -- in good-sized type -- was "Go out and see Joss Whedon’s witty whizbang of an action movie, or we will kill a kitten".
