camwynThings to remember when setting out on a bike route not previously taken:
1. The map is not the territory. No, not even if it is from terraserver.com.
2. A curb cut at one end of the block does not guarantee a curb cut at the other.
3. Do a dress rehearsal first, and do not tell your parents you are coming by bike until you have already done the dress rehearsal.
4. You may be able to beat the train to the station, but if you stop for the ticket machine, you will lose. Either buy your ticket during the dress rehearsal or pony up the extra $5 penalty for buying on-train despite the presence of a ticket vending machine.
5. If you must go into unknown territory, for the love of God, bring a companion. You cannot operate a cell phone if you are knocked unconscious by the maniacs that pass for drivers in the state of New Jersey. ETA: No, this did not happen.
6. You cannot get off the peninsula Jersey City is on and into the rest of the state by bike, unless you ride to Staten Island and go to the Outerbridge Crossing, and even that I am not entirely sure of, since I don't know if the Crossing has pedestrian walkways or not.
That's about it, really. I don't know how far I went today, but it wasn't as far as I wanted and it resulted in me missing the train to my parents' by 30 seconds (literally- I was paying for the ticket when the train pulled out). I'll visit them next week. In the meantime I shall shower and probably watch Firefly or something.
