Bike 1 My bike! This is near a public sundial on the Jersey City waterfront, taken... oh, I think around 2 PM on July 4th, 2005.

Bike 2 A rather better picture of the bike, I think, with a nice view of the chainless drive and suspension fork. I've never had a bike with either before. I'm quite proud of this one. It's a sweet little ride.

Shaft drive And this is what I love best and second-best about this bike: the shaft drive and internal gearing system, respectively. I only have one gear control on this thing, instead of one for the rings up front and one for the rings in the back. And there is no chain. And it moves like a dream.

Well, when you get the money together, I can tell you this much: the Runabout (this model) cost me about $550 for the bike, $37 for Fedex Ground shipping. I don't know how much shipping from Massachusetts to Alaska would cost. For me, paying this price was reasonably practical; I had an income tax refund, plus the bike is a car substitute.

The tires should be a dead giveaway that this was meant for use as a commuter vehicle, not for offroading. Not that this bike can't go offroad, at least a little, but we're talking 'crossing vast tracts of dirt and grass at Liberty State Park' offroad, not mountain bike trail kind of offroad. For getting around town, though, it's a wonderful thing.

if they made a bike with more gears and drop-down headgear, i'd seriously consider getting one....

Well, the seven gears on this one cover about... *checks web site* 17 gears on a standard bicycle transmission. Their mountain bike gear hubs apparently do the equivalent of twenty gears. I'm happy with what the Runabout came with, really.

I understand about the handlebars, though. I'm vaguely considering getting cow horns, although so far I'm pretty happy.

The number of gears within the range contributes to my comfort with the bike just as much as the range itself does. You've dropped 10 perfectly good gear-ratios you might need on the third Tuesday in Octember riding uphill against traffic. (Just kidding, 'kay?) Looks like a hot little commuter. Fenders, rack and panniers, and you're good to go. (I presume you've got headlamp and horn and they're just not showing up.)
