Just looked out my kitchen window as I was trying to get my macaroni and cheese off the stove, and spotted movement through the air. This being New Jersey, land of mosquitos- and also of the poor bewildered crane fly who got into the room the other day- I had to have a closer look.

My backyard (or rather, the courtyard that all the buildings on this block open onto) seems to be quite the popular hangout for dragonflies. My favourite insect ever, really.

I love this place.

Well, it rather makes sense. Dragonflies eat mosquitoes. I'm not sure if they eat the full-grown ones or just the larvae, but they do.

Beautiful! and yes, they do eat mosquitoes, both adults and larvae. So beautiful and useful.

Beautiful, and useful, and they can fly in reverse. How cool is that? The really big ones seem to fly in formation, too, with each one about ten feet from the next as they fly a grid-shape patrol pattern in my backyard.
