I have decided that I would like superpowers, and I am going to get them. To this end, I will be coming in contact with undiluted, untreated lower Hudson River water at least once a week until I either develop superpowers or am forced to admit that body parts are starting to come off. Or, y'know, the river freezes.

Translation: I like the kayaking offered by the downtown boathouse, I will probably wind up becoming a paying member to support the place, and I intend to go at least once a week if not more often until the end of boating season. I have a goal: to complete one of their weekend kayak trips to Liberty Island. This is a trip that I understand takes about three hours of constant paddling and involves dealing with the main currents of the Hudson River. I should like to be able to do this, not so much for practical or exercise reasons as to be able to say, "I can reach the Statue of Liberty under my own power." It's just a very cool idea and I should like to get there someday.

Not to mention that, while this has not yet been particularly aerobic exercise for me, I am an archer and would like to work my upper body muscles in a way that doesn't just involve lifting weights or pulling springs. Although I should in all fairness note that the sea kayak schtick works different muscles from archery... when I shoot, it mostly involves the triceps, the median and posterior deltoids, and the latissimus dorsi for the most part although of course other muscles are involved as well. The muscles that ache after paddling are more like the trapezius, the biceps, and the anterior and maybe median deltoids. Still, it's a good set of supporting muscles, neh?

Regarding your superpower acquisition plan: Just Say No to Radical Self-Modification. (http://groups-beta.google.com/group/rec.arts.comics.dc.universe/browse_frm/thread/8cd41b1d286c7022/ca8a3ec7db56ee4a#ca8a3ec7db56ee4a) :-)

The problem with getting powers from the Hudson is that you're more likely to become Hedorah than Hyperman...

I've always wanted a sea kayak. Mainly for going fishing with; with one of those, when you hit a good sized blue, it can tow you along pretty well while you're fighting it. And if you happen to hit a big tuna, or something, you can re-enact the whole Old Man and the Sea if you want.

I assume that you're familiar with rogue walrus; unlike normal walrus, whose whiskers are short because they're constantly abraded whilst digging about for clams, rogue's whiskers are long and luxurious. But their tusks are stained yellow with blood. They eat seals, mostly, but they've been known to stalk and kill other walrus, and when they can get them, people as well.

Now, imagine going after one of those in a kayak. In water cold enough to kill you pretty damn quick, all on its own.

Like I said, I've always wanted a sea kayak.

Are you after any super powers in specific? I can't recall any rumours of the Hudson endowing people with telekinesis or flight.

Please, be careful. You don't want to end up Mutant-Zombie Camwyn, do you?

Do you?

Actually, she was in Jamaica Bay, over by JFK, where the shuttlecraft crashed.

....god, I have neurons devoted to that information.
