As of 5:30 this afternoon, I am no longer a car owner.

Tomorrow I go to the DMV and surrender my license plates. Then I go to work.

No more giant incontinent puppy! Whee! And it's going to someone in the construction jobs program, so they'll have transportation to and from job sites away from the Newark area, so that's good too.

Huzzah!

First clean planet challenge: getting to the DMV this morning sans car, and then back again. It's all slope to get there so I don't think going by skate is practical, but eh. We'll see. When I get the chance I'm going to buy a commuter bike, preferably one with internal gearing and a driveshaft system instead of chains and the usual derailleur.

Which is what I wound up doing, a nice 1.5 mile walk through parts of Jersey City that I'd previously only driven. In the process I discovered something that one simply does not notice when traveling by car, namely: the DMV is about two blocks from the Journal Square PATH station, which meant that after I turned in my plates, I crossed over the railroad tracks, took a quick left, walked past the Dunkin Donuts, and got on the same train to go to work that I normally take from home.

Cars. Feh.

I wish this blasted city had far better public transport than it does around my area of the woods. If I don't get a car within the next year and a half, I swear I'm going to hijack a helicopter somewhere because the public transportation costs went up and the service went -down-.

I'll smuggle over if I can lurk somewhere and hide in a sewer and oh, I dunno, embroider Charlotte's web for the Fashion Institute.

Good for you! I wish this town had better public transit. As it is I can walk the four miles to work and arrive only a little later than if I take the bus. It's practically a coin-toss most days, unless the weather's really bad.
