Two things happening next month:

1. I am rejoining Empire Skate Club. One does not have to be a member to join in their Thursday night skates around Central Park, but they're cool and I kind of like the idea of some of the other group events they hold, so I'm gonna join the club again and start with the Thursday night skates when they start up in May. I'd do their Tuesday skates, but I'm not that confident in my ability to navigate NYC traffic yet.

Of course, this means I have to replace most of my skate armour, but that stuff's close to seven or eight years old by now, so it should've been replaced anyway. Might replace my wheels, too.

2. I'm turning 31. My birthday is next month, and while I generally don't make a big deal of it, I like people saying 'happy birthday' to me when it's appropriate to do so. I know that sounds a bit 'look at me! look at me!', but eh- sometimes I'm like that and I can't really help it.

It's the ninth. Same day as Billy Joel. Some years that's the only way I remember it, at least until my mother greets me.

It's not as romantic as you'd think, but it is a tremendous amount of fun. There's usually a group of twenty or thirty people, at least when I've done it in the past, and the group spreads out into a whole bunch of little groups depending on speed, skill, etc. Plus we've got to share the loop with folks who aren't much inclined to share- bicyclists, pedestrians, the occasional motor cop, other skaters- so there's a lot of learning to weave in and out, and to use your brakes. (I should replace mine before I go. It's in good shape at the moment, but there are a few hills in Central Park that make a skate wimp like myself go "eek" just thinking about it.)

I haven't done the Skate Club skates: have they dues/rules what have you? Speaking as a veteran NYC traffic skater, I'd say change the armor if the velcro's getting munged up and weak: Open up your bearings and wash them using one of those sorta "stick 'em in and shake 'em up" citric acid cleaner thingies, and lube'em All sorts of crud gets in there. If they still don't feel smooth, then replace the bearings. If you haven't replaced the wheels in that long, well shoot, do it. You don't want them crumbling on 5th.

Dues? No. You can join as a member, but that's mostly for discounts and freebies. Anyone can participate in one of the skates. Rules? Don't Be An Ass was the big rule last time I participated. That and Don't Skate In One Of The Really Complicated Skates On The Street Unless You're Good For It, which comes back to Don't Be An Ass in the end.

Oh, yeah. There's another rule- Wear A Helmet And Armour.

The Velcro's getting sad and I can't find my wrist guards in my car trunk. I need to clean the trunk out, but I've had this armour since I was like 22 years old. Time to upgrade. The bearings are fine and I do the citric acid cleaner anyway, but the wheels are unevenly worn despite the wossname... rotation that I do every so often. Meh. New wheels won't hurt me.

Hrm. I'd need to cough up for a helmet, which means I'd need to find one that wouldn't drive me crazy to wear. If I wore one My Lovely Wife would be much happier, though.

You GET to say 'look at me!' for your birthday. That's what I love about birthdays. Er, now that 30 is far behind me, at any rate. I cried all day on my 30th birthday because nobody took any notice of me. Since then I not only tell people, I do whatever I want to do. I generally go to work, since if I made huge plans something would go wrong and I'd feel put out, but if I want a ring ding I have one. :)
