Not to make light of my country's ambassadorial asshattery to Canada about 'giving up its sovereignty' because they don't wanna play Missile Defence Shield or anything, but if you look at who delivered the Canadian refusal, Much Becomes Clear.

The Canadian foreign minister's name is Pierre Pettigrew.

Pierre is French for Peter.

"Canada has given up its sovereignty... TO THE DARK LORD VOLDEMORT. BWAHAHAHAHA."

er. sorry. I'll be quiet now.

The possibilities here, of all the recent tension between Canada and the US all being related to Voldemort, amuses me multiple ways.

yah. Pierre keeps showing up on my tv ... the worst was when I'd just finally rented the last Harry Potter movie, watched it, turned it off, and Pierre was the first thing on normal tv I saw. Talking about ... err. Forget what it was. All I remember was going 'Pierre Pettigrew?' and being way too amused.

But I mean, if politics doesn't amuse you even as it aggravates you, what else is it good for? Such is the Canadian way, as taught to us by This Hour, Monday Report and many other shows of evil goodness.

(I still haven't heard of another country that actually had comedians help do the newscast for the election coverage, as they have done in the past here. it does make the tallies much more interesting.)

Dennis Miller used to do a great job ripping apart presidential speeches and elections on Comedy Central before he became a Far Right Conservative mouthpiece and stopped being funny. Today, we have Jon Stewart and The Daily Show. They do make the tallies a great deal more interesting!

Yeah, but here the satirists aren't relegated to cable. They're on the granddaddy of Canadian national networks, the CBC. They're cheek-by-jowl with serious news, and yet maintain their ability to skewer. They go to serious press scrums and talk to the actual politicians themselves.

It's like if the Daily Show was on NBC (and the satire wasn't watered down), and Steven Colbert went to White House press conferences and actually asked questions to the President's face.

It's a beautiful, beautiful thing. :-)

hee. I should read all the responses before I respond to a comment in my inbox. You phrased it so much better than I did. Thanks :)

(and not just talk to the actual politicians ... take them to lunch at a burger joint, or come up to them in full warrior princess garb and sling an arm around them. Neither my british or american friends can even picture this ever happening in their countries, or being allowed *L*. gotta love it.)

oh ... sorry. I wasn't clear I guess. I didn't mean other countries don't have comedians that rip the hell out of the political landscape ... they do, and I quite enjoy listening to them ;)

I mean that these comedians were part of the main national elections telecast. On the govt. owned/run channel, CBC. So it wasn't just that they got to take off on it on their own shows ... they were part of the main show, on the channel run by the very govt. that was up for election, and just having fun with the whole thing.

You didn't know? The entire Harry Potter series is really a thinly disguised allegory on Canadian politics.

It's obvious, once you know where to look.

Pettigrew, amusing name aside, is really a fairly ineffective tool, much like most of the Martin appointees. Bill Graham was a far wiser choice for foreign minister, but he's quietly gay and therefore a lousy choice to liase with Republicans (which is really ninety percent of the foreign minister's job these days), so we just stuck him with defense.

Which, come to think, would probably piss the Republicans off even more.

*raises eyebrow*

(here from metaquotes, BTW)

Really? I'd never heard that about Graham (though upon reflection it doesn't seem so spectacularly out of the question). May be silly to ask, but any sources?

Oh, he is. There was a bit of an uproar on Fox News over it, IIRC. They weren't quite sure if Martin had his head screwed on straight.

Apparently, he's married with two kids (hardly conclusive evidence, I know, but...)

The wikipedia article on Bill Graham claims he's been rumoured to be gay or bisexual, but he's "never acknowledged the rumours."

And if there's anything comics has taught me, it's that rumors and subtext MUST ALWAYS BE TRUE.

Argh.

Silly me, trusting my memory instead of being a sensible man and Wikiing the poor guy.

*shrug*

Live in Ottawa for a few years, you hear things. This being Canada, nobody really gives a damn. But, trust me. He's definitely gay (or at least bi with a history of practicing). There's a reason he traditionally evades the question of his own sexuality at press conferences.
From: [identity profile] impactbomb.livejournal.com
*goes to grah about shitty relations between his countries some more*

ARGH. We share the same continent. Why can we not get along better and not be asshats to each other? I live in Canada and America. I love them both. (Okay, sometimes I give Quebec The Look, but hey. They're cool, too.) So why do the governments have this fundamental need to get pissy with each other all the time? If rude, arrogant me can get along with the nice, polite, Canadians, there is no reason for Bush, who is supposedly a nice guy (if we listen to Ms. Rice), to not be able to get along with the Canadians as well!

(Look. Not allowing private citizens to form a bank is a lousy law, but that's not enough to have a hissy fit and NEVER SPEAK TO CANADA AGAIN. Grr. Monkies!)

I remember when I first found that out I went around telling everyone that Canada was under rule of He Who Must Not Be Named and if you weren't with me, you were against me, which made you a Death Eater.

... I've always been odd.
