Feb. 25th, 2005 01:47 pmNot to make light of my country's ambassadorial asshattery to Canada about 'giving up its sovereignty' because they don't wanna play Missile Defence Shield or anything, but if you look at who delivered the Canadian refusal, Much Becomes Clear.
The Canadian foreign minister's name is Pierre Pettigrew.
Pierre is French for Peter.
"Canada has given up its sovereignty... TO THE DARK LORD VOLDEMORT. BWAHAHAHAHA."
er. sorry. I'll be quiet now.

Date: 2005-02-25 07:46 pm (UTC)But I mean, if politics doesn't amuse you even as it aggravates you, what else is it good for? Such is the Canadian way, as taught to us by This Hour, Monday Report and many other shows of evil goodness.
(I still haven't heard of another country that actually had comedians help do the newscast for the election coverage, as they have done in the past here. it does make the tallies much more interesting.)

Date: 2005-02-25 08:52 pm (UTC)Dennis Miller used to do a great job ripping apart presidential speeches and elections on Comedy Central before he became a Far Right Conservative mouthpiece and stopped being funny. Today, we have Jon Stewart and The Daily Show. They do make the tallies a great deal more interesting!

Date: 2005-02-25 11:17 pm (UTC)It's like if the Daily Show was on NBC (and the satire wasn't watered down), and Steven Colbert went to White House press conferences and actually asked questions to the President's face.
It's a beautiful, beautiful thing. :-)

Neither my british or american friends can even picture this ever happening in their countries, or being allowed *L*. gotta love it.)

Date: 2005-02-26 04:08 pm (UTC)I mean that these comedians were part of the main national elections telecast. On the govt. owned/run channel, CBC. So it wasn't just that they got to take off on it on their own shows ... they were part of the main show, on the channel run by the very govt. that was up for election, and just having fun with the whole thing.

*raises eyebrow*
Date: 2005-02-25 09:08 pm (UTC)Really? I'd never heard that about Graham (though upon reflection it doesn't seem so spectacularly out of the question). May be silly to ask, but any sources?
-D.

Date: 2005-02-25 09:22 pm (UTC)The wikipedia article on Bill Graham claims he's been rumoured to be gay or bisexual, but he's "never acknowledged the rumours."

Silly me, trusting my memory instead of being a sensible man and Wikiing the poor guy.

Date: 2005-02-25 09:32 pm (UTC)Live in Ottawa for a few years, you hear things. This being Canada, nobody really gives a damn. But, trust me. He's definitely gay (or at least bi with a history of practicing). There's a reason he traditionally evades the question of his own sexuality at press conferences.
Excuse me. I need to rant. This likely only makes halfway decent sense.
Date: 2005-02-25 09:11 pm (UTC)ARGH. We share the same continent. Why can we not get along better and not be asshats to each other? I live in Canada and America. I love them both. (Okay, sometimes I give Quebec The Look, but hey. They're cool, too.) So why do the governments have this fundamental need to get pissy with each other all the time? If rude, arrogant me can get along with the nice, polite, Canadians, there is no reason for Bush, who is supposedly a nice guy (if we listen to Ms. Rice), to not be able to get along with the Canadians as well!
(Look. Not allowing private citizens to form a bank is a lousy law, but that's not enough to have a hissy fit and NEVER SPEAK TO CANADA AGAIN. Grr. Monkies!)

North America - great big food dish
"Mmm. Kibble."
"MY kibble!"
"Both our kibble."
"MY!"
"Fine. Whatever." *waits for chance at kibble* "Ah, more kibble."
"MY! MY! MY!"
"I am *so* going into your doghouse and widdling on your blankets."
"AAAAUGH!"
"Are you going to share the kibble now?"
"Once my owner paints the doghouse white, yes."
"Mm. Kibble."
"Fine. Our kibble."
"Isn't it nice when we share kibble?"
"It was. BUT I WANT THE KIBBLE NOW."
"Argh..."
