Then again, mebbe not.
Feb. 18th, 2005 02:55 pmI just got off the phone with my landlady. Apparently the number of dogs present in the apartment building has spoilt it for pretty well everyone; she's about to issue a memo saying no cats, no dogs.
Poop.
I suppose it's time for a fish tank now.

Date: 2005-02-18 08:33 pm (UTC)How often does she or a minion actually see the inside of the apartment?
My Lovely Wife and I are permitted two cats, and there are no dogs allowed in the building.
Many of the tenants have dogs.
We have five PermaCats and two foster kittens.
D'ya wanna buy an "O"?
Sorry. Sesame Street Moment there.

Date: 2005-02-18 08:44 pm (UTC)An addendum to my previous... i should point out that our landlord has never entered the apartment, won't without prior notice, and that when minions have appeared for repairs and the like our cats have been easy to hide (they're good at that, and they do it for us, though we tend to close doors as well.) In spite of this, since we pay up on time, we've had our lease renewed 3 years running with only the most nominal of rent hikes...

Fish ain't too cuddly, but they don't puke on your best duvet covers when they're irritated with you either.

ClassicDrogn has worked in a fish shop
Date: 2005-02-20 05:32 pm (UTC)B: Like I said, I've worked in a fish shop, so my general response to the prospect of finny things is 'Meh' at best (Somehow, three times daily dead fish patrols - when our store was FAR below the standard for what's called 'stock burn-off' and endless rotations of tank scrubbing to get rid of algae spots just turned me off to them) I do have a good story about freindly fish. You see, there was this cichlid (sp? I've forgotten - South American carnivorous fish, mostly bright and stripey in many variations) that was in a floor-level tank due to having been sick some time before I got tot the store and never moved back to the main sales tanks. Due to the position of the tank, when cleaning it I'd rest the scrubbie-less hand on the rim, and my fingers would curl around into the water there... well, this fish, which came to be called either 'Cuddles' or 'Frenchie' depending on the company (you figure it out) would swim up and into my hand, tickling its belly against the tips of my fingers. Unfortunately, you're not likely to find another cuddly fish anytime soon.
For critters that live in tanks, I'd be more inclined to go with a tortoise (dry-land turtle relative) or some other reptile, myself, just to be far, far away from pools of water that grow stinky green gunk - and at least with the more personable sorts of snake you can take them out and play a bit. their biggest concern is generally temperature and humidity, the one being relatively easy unless you've got building-wide AC or something, and the other handled by spritzing them once or twice a day.

Re: ClassicDrogn has worked in a fish shop
Date: 2005-02-20 06:20 pm (UTC)I've had one snake before. Howard was nice. Shy, but nice. Unfortunately no one else in the house seemed to want to be in the same room as him even though he was so small as to only eat feeder minnows.

Date: 2005-02-18 11:30 pm (UTC)Box turtles are good, too, also live mostly in a fishtank (with newspaper, not water), and eat fresh fruit and veggies with perhaps the occasional earthworm.
Yes, I'm weird. But when I was growing up, one of our pets was a South American frog (http://www.geocities.com/Petsburgh/Zoo/6379/jabba.jpg) that ate *mice*, so wha'dya want? :->

Date: 2005-02-20 07:28 pm (UTC)Hm. Show quality guppies, the iridescent kind... possibly, possibly. I was thinking more on the anabantid side, like bettas and gouramis, if I went for a tropical tank rather than goldfish.
But still... hm.
