Today has been a good day. I got off the train and found out that one of the local depanneurs (it's halfway between being an Asian grocery and a bodega, so I don't really know what else to call it) had started stocking my FAVOURITE BRAND OF VEGETARIAN JERKY* EVER. Then I managed to sit patiently through almost half an hour on hold and finally got a nice gentleman on the phone to help me connect my new dial-up modem. I GOTS INTERNET NOW. Won't be surfing any image-intensive web pages any time soon, but hey- I can TALK TO PEOPLE AGAIN. Woohoo!

(Of course, I'll be logging off fairly soon 'cos I've got an RL friend to call in about half an hour. But I'll be back later, baybee.)

For ladymondegreen's benefit, is it kosher? And is it free of tomato/potato/eggplant/(sorbit,manit,malit)ol?

ladymondegreen and I have had a number of arguments about whether various local shops are bodegas or asian groceries. My definition is that a bodega has merchandise filling in the window, and doesn't have a produce section. Which shop is this?

*peers at Stonewall's Jerquee* It's got the Circle-K kosher mark (shut up, Bill, shut up, Ted). The beef flavour has tomato paste, but the original 'mild' has... lessee. Soy, water, yeast, soy, salt, onion, garlic, allspice, ginger, coriander, cayenne. So the original flavour would be ok. Don't have teriyaki on hand so I can't vouch for that or the chicken flavour. The shop is... crud, I don't remember the name, it's got "Fruit" in the name and it's run by a Chinese family and you can buy tofu out of the bucket in the back but it's all fruit and veg up front.

Is it the shop on Grove Street, near the PATH station? Fridges all the way in the back?

If so, it's definitely an Asian market, not a bodega, even if they do sell Goya products.

... well, I think it's Newark. Might be Montgomery. It's the street that runs towards the Turnpike, and it comes before Columbus.

Oh, there's regular beef jerky for sale in lots of stores- almost any CVS or K-Mart will have it in the snack food aisle. Jerky's become quite popular now that Atkins has taken over the world. A company called Wolverines makes a rather nice turkey product similar to, but not the same level of dryness as, beef jerky. Those you can get in a GNC.

Oh, that? Heh. Truth be told, I'm not a proper vegetarian. I've just given up meat and any other foods that require an animal to die for Lent. I just happen to have the oral fixation of an ex-smoker (although I've never smoked), so I tend to prefer jerky-style snacks to things like potato chips.

That's my drawing of the skull of a male Megaloceros giganteus, the extinct Ice Age giant deer, aka the Irish elk. Largest deer ever to live, as in, bigger than a friggen' moose. Those antlers weigh 35-40 lbs. each. I drew that from the skeleton in the Lila Acheson Wallace Wing of Extinct Mammals and their Relatives at the Museum of Natural History in NYC.
