Have seen four episodes of Due South so far.

I am no longer screaming about being doomed. I do, however, have a terrible urge to scratch Paul Gross behind the ears and make the same 'oooh what a lovely boy' noises I use for making friends with pit bulls.

Well, I dunno about him, but with dogs... I only pet dogs that show an interest in me after sniffing my hand- anything else would be rude. The ones that get scritched almost inevitably wind up pushing their heads up against my leg like a cat, which is a little unnerving when it's a full grown pit bull someone bought for home security purposes. The others jump up and try to lick my face or something like that.

At least I recognise the urge as the same one I had re: Agent Mulder when he wasn't being a jerk.

I can't believe you've never seen Due South before! For some reason, it was incredibly popular in Finland. As for the 'wolf', unfortunately we've got a lot of wolf-dogs (mostly crossbreeds with German Shepherds) running around wild in packs near my summerhouse, and there is a tremendous push among local hunters to go out and eliminate them to 'keep the wolves purebred' - at the same time that the wolves are being hunted (secretly) too... so, I'm happy to see a wolf-dog happy on tv...
I have the same reaction to 'security' dogs as you do - I've always thought they didn't see me as a theat because I'm so small, which was why they never did anything but sniff and butt their heads against me...

heh. Me, I'm 5'10" and weigh around 170 lbs. I must just smell right, or something. I don't spook easily around dogs unless they bark when my attention is so far elsewhere that I had no other knowledge of their presence, and I'm relatively good at reading dog body language, so I know better than to push my luck with an uninterested or tense animal.

Before this I'd only seen about fifteen minutes of one episode of Due South. It was on TV long before I'd developed any interest in Canada, so it never really occurred to me to watch it.

The first season DVDs don't include the pilot? What a gyp! You're missing out on... well from here on I babble incoherently, so let's just say you need to get your hands on that pilot.

The season three DVD set includes the pilot movie, so you will get to it eventually if you keep getting the DVDs. Is really is worth it.

Hahahaha. Wow. You know what's the worst thing about that whole Bay thing? I work for the Hudson's Bay Company, so every time I see a Bay blanket on Due South I squee stupidly. (Those blankets are wicked expensive, randomly. I want one so badly.)

It is a gyp. It should have been released with Season 1, not Season 3, since it makes a helluva lot more sense in Season 1.

I hope he turns out to be more competent as the series goes on. I've only seen four episodes so far, and right now he- and most of the Chicago cops- ring a little too strongly of parody for my tastes. He started winning points last night when he had to deal with Richard Moll the poo-seller, and got things right. We'll see how it goes.

He does. I wasn't fond of him at first either, but he does grow on you. Check out "The Deal", "Juliet is Bleeding" and the one where they get stranded in the wilderness after a plane crash (first ep, second season, I think) for great Ray stuff.

Or, well, "Victoria's Secret", if you don't mind HAVING YOUR HEART RIPPED FROM YOUR CHEST. ahem. 'Scuse me. Most evil ex since T'Pring, I'm tellin' you.

And how much did the first season set you back, by the way? All I've got are ancient, about-to-die tapes. I'd love to have the DVDs if they're anything like affordable.

$40-some-odd on eBay plus $8 shipping and handling. Other seasons seem to be available for about the same price. The seller I used is based in Ontario; the American sellers charge less for s/h but the prices on the DVDs themselves seem to be higher for some reason, so it winds up balancing out.

Apropos of nothing whatsoever, how hard is it to get from where I live now (Jersey City, spitting distance from the PATH train, slightly longer to light rail) to where you are? Or vice versa.

On the weekdays, not that hard - I can take the train to Hoboken, then path or lightrail; weekends a bit harder, mostly requiring me to go into Manhattan then PATH over.

Ok. Know NOTHING about this show, but am now compelled to find it and watch it. What's it about?

Oh, boy. Um, let's see.

Start with your basic cop show set in a Big American City. In this case it's Chicago. Cop show.

Okay, now focus the camera on two particular cops, so it's about them rather than the city or the precinct. Buddy cop show.

Now throw in the fact that they are Very Different and this is Funny. Wacky buddy cop show.

The wacky is because one of the cops is an extremely scruffy Chicago PD detective and the other one is a straight-arrow Canadian Mountie who, through one thing and another, is now on permanent assignment to the Canadian consulate in Chicago. And when I say 'straight-arrow' I am talking about someone who is, like, Sergeant Preston turned up to eleven. Also, he has a dog. Well, he says wolf. But you get the idea.

That's the basics. It's quite a lot of fun so far. And a number of episodes feature Leslie Nielsen as Sergeant Buck Frobisher, an old friend of the Mountie's dad, and anything that gets Leslie Nielsen into the dress reds is worth watching in my book.
