Today when I was in Penn Station getting a train ticket to get to my parents' place, pick up the car, and go visit my sister and nephew in hospital, I spotted a fellow on line with a long, low-slung black dog on a leash. It seemed awfully solid-built about the head for a dachshund, but too light-boned for an off colour basset, so I crouched down and held out a hand. When the dog seemed pleased with the smell of me, I started petting him and asked his owner what he was.

... how the hell do you cross breed a dachshund and a black Labrador, anyway? never mind, I don't want to know...

...wow.

With a female lab, I hope. I really hope.

Weeeeeell, according to my preceptor, the mother was an unusually short lab and the father was an unusually tall chihuaua...but still. :D

Oh, this brings back images. When we were trying to breed one of our mares, we found out the tricks the breeder uses to bring them into season.

They put them in a pasture with a shetland pony stallion. Apparently, the presence of the stallion will bring them into season, but the poor boy is too short to do anything about it.

Needless to say, "shetland on a step-stool" became an inside joke with the family. ;)

Females will lay down for males to service them if needs be.

I knew a dog named 'Bubba' back home. German Shepard-Basset Hound mix. Weird dog.

Actually, I bet the Doxie and the Lab took care of the logistics themselves. Those critters can be darned determined sometimes, especially with a bitch in heat.

Did you tell him someone stole the bottom half of his dog?

I knew a dog who was a black Lab-Welsh Corgi cross. Unfortunately, the Corgi was the mother.

(The dog was adorable - she looked like a Lab built on a Corgi chassis, but she had the big Corgi ears.)
